The DP World Tour continues with this weeks Qatar Masters at Doha Golf Club, Doha, Qatar.
The 132 field with the top 65 including ties making the weekend will all be competing for a share of the $3.75M prize purse with the winner collecting the Qatar Masters title & a winning cheque for $625,125.
Ewen Ferguson won his breakthrough maiden DPWT title here last year. His winning scorecard read 281, -7.
Doha Golf Club will be playing 7,446 yards long this week, it’s a par 72 desert track that should suit the big hitters in the pack.
The weather is forecast to be hot & sunny throughout with breezes peaking at around 15mph.
This event will be screened on Sky Sports Golf with live coverage starting at 1pm on Thursday afternoon.
So let’s move on with this week’s betting predictions for the Qatar Masters.
Thorbjorn Olesen 18/1 EW Various 1-8 places
For my first & main pick in the desert, I’m going to single out Thorbjorn Olesen 18/1 EW Various 1-8 places.
Apart from the withdrawal at the weather-affected Alfred Dunhill Links Championship the experienced 33-year-old Dane arrives in Qatar on the back of three Top 20 performances with two of them inside the Top 10.
T9th last week at the Andalucia Masters, T17th Open de Espana & T10th at the Open de France.
A multiple winner on the DP World Tour with another W this year when scooping the Thailand Classic but what’s worth noting is the Dane’s half-a-dozen Top 10 efforts in desert conditions. He also finished T3rd at this event & venue a few years back. Thorbjorn Olesen can make his class shine in the desert sun with another visit to the winner’s enclosure, he could be the master in Qatar this weekend.
Sabastian Soderberg 50/1 EW William Hill 1-8 places
For my next selection, I’m going to suggest Sabastian Soderberg 50/1 EW William Hill 1-8 places. The 33-year-old Swede has previously finished inside the Top 20 at this event & venue & he’s another who seems to enjoy playing golf in the desert.
Having not missed a cut for double digits now and & with two Top 20 finishes at the last three attempts, Soderberg could go well again this week.
T19th last week at the Andalucia Masters was a reasonable effort amidst tricky conditions. Still, it’s his runner-up spot at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship earlier in the year that has me more than interested. He also finished 5th at the recent three-day washout Alfred Dunhill Links Championship but here’s the big clue everyone. Sebastian Soderberg ranks 1st on the DPWT for Sand Saves so a week in the desert should more than wet his appetite.
He’s also ranked inside the Top 20 for Stroke Average & Putting stats so if producing all of the above along with the fine recent form then 50/1 with eight places looks very tempting.
Richard Mansell 40/1 EW PaddyPower 1-8 places
For my final tip this week I’m Doha I’m going to point you all in the direction of Richard Mansell 40/1 EW Paddy Power 1-8 places. Just like Nigel back in the day, Richard Mansell is firing on all cylinders at the moment & another visit to the winner’s podium seems imminent, this time it could be pole position from start top finish.
3rd place outright just a few days ago at the Andalucia Masters was a tremendous effort from the 28-year-old Englishman as was T6th the weekend before at the Open de Espana. T6th at the Singapore Classic makes it three Top 10s this year for Mansell but it’s the last two efforts that have him flashing up on the radar again.
He can hit a good ball Off the Tee & with power & distance being handy this week at Doha Golf Club, where Richard Mansell could finally get over the finishing line with a winning performance in the desert.
