The DP World Tour keeps up its African theme this week with the MyGolfLife Open at Pecanwood Golf and Country Club, Hartbeespoort, South Africa.
The 156 field, with the top 65 making the cut, will all be competing on this par 72, parkland layout for a share of the $1.5m purse with the winner collecting the title and $250,000.
Just touching on that note with the prize purse, don’t you think it’s night and day,the difference between the $1.5m ($250,000 to winner) money pot on the DP World Tour compared to the mammoth $20m (3.6m to winner) being dished out over on the PGA Tour for The Players Championship?
Richard Bland is the highest ranked player at this event, he’s currently 56th in the world rankings so the rest of this field are all over and above that mark. With 47 of the world’s Top 50 playing at Sawgrass this week for The Players Championship it opens the door for a breakthrough winner at the MyGolfLifeOpen.
The weather is forecast to be sunny and very warm throughout with only gentle breezes to contend with.
I can’t seem to find any TV coverage for this event, if anyone would be kind enough to help me out on this would be totally appreciated.
So let’s get on with some selections for this weeks MyGolfLife Open in South Africa.
Daniel Van Tonder
For my first and main selection I’m going to single out one of last week’s picks. I’m prepared to give Daniel Van Tonder 35/1 EW another chance especially since he’s back in his homeland where he always produces the goods.
The 30 year old South African will relish this challenge and this long track will more than suit Van Tonder’s game.
Since winning the SA Open Championship at Sun City, Van Tonder hasn’t missed the cut in five attempts since, which include two Top 20 finishes. He was 20th at the Ras Al Khaimah Classic and an even better 13th at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship.
I’m actually surprised to see Van Tonders odds above some others in the field and I think the 35/1 on offer represents good value and Daniel Van Tonder could be the one they all have to beat in his own backyard.
Connor Syme
For my next selection I’m going to advise Connor Syme 75/1 EW Bet365.
The 26 year old home grown young talent from Kirkcaldy has fared well over his last three tournaments and is showing up on the radar.
He was a respectable 26th at the Magical Kenya Open last weekend, before that he was more than decent with a 6th finish at the Ras Al Khaimah Classic with the other being 27th at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship.
With most of the world’s golfing elite at The Players Championship, you’d struggle to find better form over the previous three events .
The young Scot has form in Africa, he finished 3rd at the Magical Kenya Open in 2021 so conditions will suit.
Syme is yet to win on the DP World Tour so it could be him who makes his breakthrough this weekend, bagging his maiden title to the delight of us all back home while we all go collect at a more than generous 75/1, sound good eh?
Brandon Stone
For my next suggestion I’m going to include Brandon Stone 66/1 EW Bet365.
The 28 year old South African hasn’t won an event since winning The Scottish Open at Gullane Golf Club in 2018 but don’t let that put you off.
Stone played this course as an amateur so he knows it like the back of his hand. This is more than an advantage over this field and I’m surprised the firms haven’t recognised this.
At his last DP World Tour event he finished inside the Top 20 at the Ras Al Khaimah Classic so he does come home with some form.
Stone has what most at this event haven’t, not just one DP World Tour title but three. Without being disrespectful, this is a weak field in South Africa and Brandon Stone could easily take advantage in his own back garden with a much needed victory in front of his home fans.
Brandon Stone v Matthias Schmid
For my final selection it’s the customary matchbet and this week I’m going to advise Brandon Stone again but this time to beat Matthias Schmid over 72 holes 9/10 Betfair.
