It’s Nachos and Tacos this week as the PGA Tour heads to Mexico for the Mexico Open at Vidanta Vallarta GC, Vallarta, Mexico.
The 144 field, with again the top 65 including ties making the cut, will all be competing for a share of the $7.3m prize purse with the winner collecting the title and a cheque for $1.3m.
Vidanta will be playing 7,456 yards long this week, it’s a par 71, parkland track where the key to any success will be accuracy with a hot putter around these tricky dance floors.
Before I continue, I just want to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you for all the kind messages, DMvs, likes etc after we singled out the winner yet again last weekend. It was only a fortnight before we advised Scottie Scheffler to win The Masters and Pablo Larrazabal made it two winners in as many weeks for us all to savour here at MFT when he won the ISPS Handa Championship in Spain at a handsome 28/1.
I said local knowledge would prevail and it certainly proved just that with our main selection winning in his own backyard.
Congratulations Pablo and well done to everyone who formed an orderly queue to collect. As always, I’m just so happy and glad I can help so man , it’s what makes it all worthwhile, bashing they bookies and long may it continue.
So back to this weeks Mexico Open.
The weather is forecast to be sunny and warm throughout wit temperatures in the high 20sC and breezes expected to peak at around 15mph.
This event will be screened on Sky Sports Golf with live coverage starting at 1.45pm GMT on Thursday afternoon.
So let’s move on with some selections for the Mexico Open.
Tony Finau
For my first and main selection this week I’m going to single out Tony Finau 25/1 EW SportNation.
The 32 year old from Salt Lake City hasn’t been firing on all cylinders recently but this lay out will more than suit his game and he could be eyeing up the victory already.
Finau’s long ball striking and precision iron shots, as well as his skills on the greens,could all come together this weekend and give him his first title since winning The Northern Trust last August when beating Cameron Smith in a play -off.
Finau has good form on paspalum grass, his most notable performance being 8th at Kiawah Island last year at The USPGA Championship. He also won the Puerto Rico Open in 2016 under similar conditions.
With Jon Rahm being the red hot favourite this week in Mexico, I’m looking to oppose the World No.2 at such skinny odds (5/1) and Tony Finau could be the best alternative in a much weaker than usual field.
Kevin Na
For my next pick I’m going to advise Kevin Na 28/1 EW Bet365. The 38 year old from Seoul, South Korea, is another who will have conditions to suit and comes here with some fine recent form.
A very respectable 14th at Augusta National just a fortnight ago at The Masters was followed up with 26th at The RBC Heritage and a recent 9th at the WGC Dell Technologies Matchplay suggests to me a victory may be looming.
Already with five PGA Titles in the bag, this could be the best opportunity in a while for Na to make it half a dozen PGA crowns.
Na has only entered eight events this year, he has two missed cuts but the other six are all Top 30 finishes with four of them being in the Top 20.
Again, if Rahm doesn’t run away with this then Kevin Na may just be the one who can take advantage and land us yet another 28/1 winner, a repeat of what we delivered last weekend. Sounds good eh? Every chance if you ask me.
Abraham Ancer
For my next suggestion I’m going to point you in the direction of Abraham Ancer 20/1 EW William Hill 1-8 places.
The 31 year old Mexican will have all the local crowd behind him and this could spur Ancer on to his second victory on the PGA Tour.
He won the WGC FedEx St Jude Invitational to earn his maiden PGA title last year and Ancer will for sure bring another title home sooner rather than later if you ask me.
It’s kinda tricky to go on Ancer’s recent form as it’s a mixed bag but notable recent performances worth a mention include 5th at the WGC Dell Technologies Matchplay and 8th at the Saudi International over on the DP World Tour.
Ancer has been unlucky on so many occasions with too many runners-up prizes to mention but he could go one better this week in his native homeland to the delight of everyone in Mexico and also all of us here at MFT.
Pat Perez v Kiradech Aphibarnrat
For my final selection it’s the customary matchbet NAP which again, was so kind to us last weekend. This week I’m really liking the look of Pat Perez to beat Kiradech Aphibarnrat 10/11 NAP Betfair over the 72 holes.
