The DP World Tour remains in the British Isles this week with the Cazoo Classic at Hillside Golf Club, Southport, England.
The 144 field with the top 65 making the cut will all be competing for a share of the €1.75 M prize purse with the winner collecting the Cazoo Classic title and a winner’s cheque for €297,500.
Cazoo Classic Preview
Calum Hill will not return to defend the title he won at the London Club last year, it was the young Scots maiden DP World Tour title and remains his only victory to date but he has been hampered with injury recently and has withdrawn from his last three events.
Hillside will be playing 7,109 yards long this week, it’s a par 72, links course where the key attribute will be scrambling around the greens with a hot putter on these fast tricky dance floors.
The weather is forecast to be much cooler over the weekend with cloudier conditions bringing some showers with sunny intervals. Breezes are expected to peak at around 16mph for Sunday’s final round, definitely enough to make things interesting.
This event will be screened on Sky Sports Golf with live coverage starting at 3.30 pm on Thursday afternoon.
So let’s move on with this week’s Cazoo Classic predictions.
Cazoo Classic predictions
Robert McIntyre – 14/1
For my main tip in Southport, I’m going to single out Robert McIntyre 14/1 EW Bet365. I’ve been waiting for the perfect opportunity for Bob to double up on his DP World Crowns and the young 25-year-old from Oban can use his links experience to his advantage this week at Hillside.
Bob’s recent form hasn’t been spectacular, I’m sure he’d be the first to admit that but it has been consistent. He finished a very respectable T34th last weekend at St Andrew’s and by making the cut at The Open, the young Scot has now made the cut at all of the ten majors he has entered to date, well done Bob, impressive stuff. Bob also finished T2nd on this track in 2019 at the British Masters when beaten by one shot by Marcus Kinhult so definitely knows his way around here.
MacIntyre has four Top 20 finishes this year with the best of the bunch being a Top 10 place at the Ras Al Khaimah Classic where he finished 9th. He is currently ranked 8th on the DP World Tour for Sand Saves at 64.91% and 21st for Average Putts per round at 28.43. If Bob can produce these kinda figures this week in Southport then he will be well on his way to doubling up with a well-deserved second victory on the DP World Tour and with it bags of confidence to power on with many more to follow.
Marcus Kinhult – 66/1
For my next prediction, I’m going to advise the player who beat Robert MacIntyre here in 2019, Marcus Kinhult 66/1 EW Skybet. 1-8 places Again it’s all about course management here so who better to side with than a player who’s conquered this venue in the past.
As mentioned above the 25-year-old kid from Sweden has a proven track record at this venue but my only concern is three missed cuts at the same number of attempts. However there is some form in the bag for Kinhult this year, he was T8th at the Magical Kenya Open and even better T3rd at the Qatar Masters.
Another with only one DP World Tour title in the bag to date, it’s only a matter of time before this talented kid ignites and I’m sure many more trophies will land in the cabinet. I’m the first to admit that this has risk but saying that so does every other selection. With no stats that stick out due to recent poor form, I’m thinking Marcus Kinhult can use the good memories around here to put him back on track with a much-needed victory.
The firms may just be a little generous here and the 66/1 on offer could easily make them look silly on Sunday evening. My advice is to take it while it’s available safe in the knowledge that just a place will return a tidy profit.
Marcus Armitage – 33/1
For my next pick, I’m thinking about another Marcus, this time Marcus Armitage 33/1 1-7 places. Paddy Power The 35-year-old from Salford is a birdie machine when he gets going and has made the cut at both of the Scottish links events over the past fortnight. Armitage can boast four Top 20 finishes this year with his best performance being at the Qatar Masters where he finished in 5th place.
A return to home soil could be just what Armitage requires in his quest to double up as he is another who only has the one DP World Tour crown when winning the European Porsche Open in 2021. Armitage made the cut at St Andrew’s last weekend at The 150th Open Championship and also carded two rounds under par on the scorecard, both 71s.
If he produces that kind of form here at Hillside then for sure he’ll be competing on the back nine on Sunday afternoon, possibly on his way to claiming the Cazoo Classic title with another fine performance in front of a home crowd.
For my final selection, it’s the customary match bet and for this week’s Nap I’m going to suggest Marcus Armitage again but this time to beat Alexander Bjork over 72 holes .10/11 Nap Bet365.
