Will Zalatoris has the consistency to challenge for Open Championship 2022
The Open Championship 2022, the last major of the year, will be played from Thursday 14 to Sunday 17 July on the Old Course at St Andrews, Scotland.
The 2021 Open Championship was won by Collin Morikawa with a score of 265, 15-under-par. That gave Morikawa a two-stroke advantage over his fellow-American Jordan Spieth. In winning the title, Morikawa became the first player since Ben Curtis in 2003 to win on his Open Championship debut.
Favourite for the title going into the tournament is Rory McIlroy. The four-time major winner has had a good year to date, with top-10 finishes in all three of the majors in 2022. McIlroy won the Open in 2014 and is 10/1 with Betfair to win the title this year. He’s long overdue another major and he’s in the form to suggest he can do it, but the current odds don’t really appeal.

So who will win The Open 2022?
The Spaniard Jon Rahm hasn’t matched his achievements in 2021, but he did win the Mexican Open in May and finished in a creditable Tied-12th at the recent US Open. Rahm can be backed at odds of 12/1 with Betfair.
Scottie Scheffler has five top-eight finishes in his last six majors, including a tie for 2nd at the US Open. The 25-year-old can be backed at 14/1 with Betfair.
Justin Thomas has yet to crack the top-10 in five attempts at The Open, so looks a risky punt at 16/1 with BoyleSports.
Defending champion Collin Morikawa already has two majors and a total of five top-five finishes in the majors in just three full seasons, so is a definite contender at attractive odds of 18/1 with BoyleSports.

Can our US Open winner follow up in St Andrews?
Having claimed his first major title with the US Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, our 33/1 winning pick Matt Fitzpatrick is sure to have plenty of backers at 20/1 with William Hill. However, on the back of such a high-point, it’s asking a lot of a young player to win back-to-back majors.
Jordan Spieth won the Open in 2017 and was runner-up to Morikawa last year. However, he’s not claimed a top-30 finish in any of the three majors this year to date, so the 22/1 with William Hill looks about right.
Will Zalatoris ran Fitzpatrick mighty close in Brookline and has three top-six finishes in the majors this year. He has only previously played one round at the Open though, with the 2020 event being cancelled due to coronavirus and Zalatoris being forced to withdraw with injury after the first-round last year (having finished the round in contention at 1-under-par).
Taking aside that enforced withdrawal, Zalatoris has six top-eight finishes in seven majors. He missed the cut at the US Open in his first major in 2018, but since then it’s only the 2021 US Open (where he again missed the cut), where he’s failed to finish among the leaders.
He’s on offer at odds of 25/1 with Betfair, which look enticing for a player displaying such consistency at the very highest level of the game.

Other potential contenders at bigger odds include the Australian Cameron Smith, Xander Schauffele, Shane Lowry, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Cantlay, Hideki Matsuyama, Viktor Hovland, Brooks Koepka, Tyrrell Hatton, Louis Oosthuizen, Tommy Fleetwood, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Rose, Tony Finau and Sam Burns.
And, of course, many will always be tempted to put a few quid on Tiger Woods.
