The DP World Tour arrives in the UK for this week’s British Masters at the Brabazon Course, The Belfry, Sutton Coldfield, England.
The 156 field with the top 65 including ties will all be competing for a share of the $3.5M prize purse with the winner collecting the British Masters title & a winner’s cheque for $538,000.
Thorbjorn Olesen returns to defend his crown having won this event last year with one shot to spare over Sebastian Soderberg, his winning scorecard read 278,-10.
The Brabazon Course at The Belfry will be playing 7,336 yards long this week, it’s a par 72 Parkland layout that will definitely suit the big hitters.
The weather is forecast to be cloudy throughout with sunny intervals. Breezes will peak at around 15mph.
This event will be screened on Sky Sports Golf with live coverage starting at 1 pm on Thursday afternoon.
Min Woo Lee 11/1 EW Betfred 1-10 places
For my first and main selection to win the British Masters, I’m going to advise Min Woo Lee 11/1 EW Betfred 1-10 places. The 24-year-old Aussie kid is world-class and arrives in the UK on the back of two fine Top 10 performances. 9th at the weekend at the Travelers Championship can be backed up with an amazing effort at the US Open where he finished 5th at the Los Angeles Country Club. Min Woo Lee has already tasted victory on the British mainland when scooping the Scottish Open in 2021.
That same year he finished 21st at The Belfry so he does have course knowledge.
Min Woo Lee is a class act in this field and he can take full advantage with no Rahms, Scheffler or McIlroy around him this week. Other notable performances worth a mention this year include T6th at The Players Championship & 18th at the US PGA Championship.
If Min Woo Lee can show us some of that form this week at The Belfry then he could be well on his way to claiming the British Master’s Title 2023.
Alexander Bjork 28/1 Skybet 1-8 places
For my next best selection I’m going to recommend Alexander Bjork 28/1 Skybet 1-8 places. The 33-year-old from Sweden ticks all the boxes on my list this week at The Belfry. He has all the key attributes required for success around here with his sublime ball striking, short game and precision irons. You’ll be struggling to find a player on the DPWT who has as much stats inside the Top 10 this season.
- 3rd Stroke Average
- 3rd Par 5 Scoring
- 3rd Scrambling
- 7th SG Putting
- 8th Driving Accuracy
All of the above are critical stats required to get the W this week on the Brabazon Course but it’s not just the stats that has me excited about Bjork’s chances. The Swede hasn’t missed a cut all this year finishing no worse than 42nd at the last dozen attempts.
He has accumulated five Top 10 finishes this year alone with the best of those being runner-up at the Ras Al Khaimah Classic. It’s hard to believe that Alexander Bjork only has one title to his name but I’m a firm believer that consistency always pays off so I’m hoping that’s the case for both him and us when he doubles up this weekend at The Belfry.
Victor Perez 33/1 Skybet 1-6 places
For my final outright pick, I’m going to suggest Victor Perez 33/1 Skybet 1-6 places.
My shortlist isn’t very short this week but I’m willing to give the 30yrs old Frenchman another chance after tipping him last time out. He shot a final round 68 on Sunday at the BMW International Open to finish inside the Top 20 so he does have form on the bag.
I did say last week that I had a feeling Perez would win but I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve thought this in the past with my selection only for them to go on and win the next weekend, so frustrating. I’m hoping this may be the case this weekend with Perez who is playing good golf at the moment. 12th place at the recent US PGA Championship was a tremendous effort and 9th at the Italian Open where this year’s Ryder Cup will be held is also worth mentioning.
The victory at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at the start of the year is obviously the highlight this season for the Frenchman. He is another who has been victorious on British shores when bagging the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2019. He’s hotter than most with a putter and his Stoke Average isn’t too shabby either. I’m going to stick with Victor this weekend in the hope that we can add that Y on to Victor this coming Sunday. That’s a victory in my book.
