Racing on the Sussex Downs is from 13:10 until 16:55 and you can watch it all via live streaming when logged into MansionBet. Our expert tips for day one at Glorious Goodwood are here.
13:10 – British E.B.F. EBF Fillies’ Handicap (1m)
Tomorrow’s Dream is very much on the improve after a winning handicap bow at Chepstow and a luckless second since at Newbury. Tom Marquand’s mount should be in the firing line but an each-way squeak goes to ALABAMA WHITMAN under champion jockey Oisin Murphy.
Richard Spencer’s filly was perhaps unsuited by testing ground at Royal Ascot last month on her first attempt at a mile and, with cheekpieces fitted now and the champion back up, she may run well at a decent price.
Tip: Alabama Whitman
13.45 – Unibet You’re On Handicap (1m2f)
MAYDANNY ran a really good race in the Silver Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot last month when he finished seventh, leading home his group which were behind the pace. That was a very pleasing run on the back of a success at Yarmouth but he comes here having disappointed since at Newmarket when a well-backed favourite. Mark Johnston pushes him up in trip now and he can bounce back. Babbo’s Boy for Ralph Beckett is also forgiven a poor last time effort on soft ground at Haydock and is worth an interest on previous form.
Tip: Maydanny
14:15 – Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes (Group 2, 7f)
The impressive Chesham Stakes winner BATTLEGROUND looks just the sort to go well here for Aidan O’Brien. He powered home that afternoon and, like the yards’ previous Vintage winner War Decree, is a son of War Front on an upward trajectory coming to Goodwood.
He should be able to get Ryan Moore on the scoreboard, with perhaps Tom Dascombe’s Devious Company the one to fear most after his good second in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket.
Tip: Battleground
14.45 – Qatar Lennox Stakes (Group 2, 7f)
Marie’s Diamond ran a blinder in the Queen Anne at Ascot last month, setting some good fractions on the front end. He didn’t quite match that in the Summer Mile since but, given the pace he has at times shown in his races, might feature again dropped to 7f at a price.
SPACE BLUES has beaten the like of Safe Voyage and D’Bai in his Listed/Group 3 wins at Haydock and Longchamp this summer already and sets the benchmark for the high-flying Charlie Appleby yard (31 per-cent strike-rate lately).
Tip: Space Blues
15:15 – Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1, 2m)
Can anything stop STRADIVARIUS in his quest for an history fourth Goodwood Cup win? Not on the evidence of last month’s Gold Cup romp at Ascot. Half a mile less to travel here but that was a superb display and Frankie Dettori’s mount is going to be take some halting.
He concedes 15lb to the Irish Derby winner Santiago but John Gosden’s charge is himself the only three-year-old winner of this race since Lucky Moon in 1990 and so the Ballydoyle pretender will need to be very good to prevail. David Simcock’s Spanish Mission might be the one at a big price to run well.
Tip: Stradivarius
15:45 – Qatar Handicap (5f)
He has a bit of a hit or miss profile now but David Griffiths’ ORNATE ran a storming race here last year when third in the Group 2 King George behind Battaash. That bodes well and it remains his only go at this downhill 5f. If he’s on a going day he may outrun decent odds now that he’s dropped 6lb below his previous win-mark.
Tip: Ornate
16.20 – British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes (6f)
Getting past a Mark Johnston-trained frontrunner is a thankless sort of task that has broken the will of many a good horse. MAJD AL ARAB still bore the signs of inexperience when runner-up at Newmarket last time on his second start, hanging in a close finish. He should be suited to Goodwood and the booking of Ryan Moore is clearly a positive for his chance in this maiden.
Tip: Majd Al Arab
16.55 – British European Breeders Fund EBF Fillies’ Handicap (1m4f)
She’s firmly on the upgrade since switching to the turf last month and DANCING APPROACH has won both her starts at Haydock in good style. An 8lb rise for the latest of those may not prevent another winning effort for this daughter of Camelot.
Elsewhere, Jason Watson takes over on Time Voyage and his excellent Goodwood record may be a benefit to the Raven’s Pass filly as she tackles this trip for the first time.
Tip: Dancing Approach
