We’ve now seen every nation at the World Cup and it’s been a mixed bag for some of the teams that were at the top of the betting pre-tournament.
Spain, France and England have all impressed with comfortable wins but it’s been a very different story for Argentina and Germany.
Brazil, who looked good last night, still lead the market at 11/4 but new second faves are France who swatted aside Australia 4-1. England are next in the betting alongside Spain at 13/2. Lionel Messi’s Argentina have drifted to 17/2 whilst Germany are out to a massive 25/1 to win the trophy from here.
Wales and Iran get the second round of matches underway this morning and it’s a game the Welsh really need to win to progress. Based on what Iran offered against England that’s certainly with Rob Page’s side’s capabilities.
A 1-1 draw with the USA wasn’t the worst start for Wales but England up next this their best chance to add three points to their tally.
Iran were expected to set-up defensively against the Three Lions but they were dismantled with ease. They could double-down on that defensive approach today and make things tough for Gareth Bale and co.
We’ve seen a few games take a while to warm up and at the tournament – all four games yesterday were 0-0 at half time. Ten of the 16 matches so far have finished under 2.5 goals, six of them under 1.5.
This one could follow a similar pattern. A goal-less first half pays 11/8 while Bet365 go 5/6 there won’t be a goal before the 34th minute.
Next up it’s Qatar v Senegal. Good luck picking the bones out of that one but there looks better betting opportunities out there today.
The late afternoon kick-off sees Netherlands clash with Ecuador. Both sides got off to winning starts in their openers so a win for either will all but see them qualify.
The Dutch go in to it as 8/11 favourites but they took a while to break down Senegal so will feel they have some work to do as they work their way in to the tournament.
Ecuador put away Qatar in their first match but the Oranje are a major step up and likely a step too far. Louis van Gaal’s side could win this with a few to spare and can be backed to win and score two or more at 11/10

A 7pm Friday night kick-off couldn’t be any better for the millions of England fans back home and they’ll be expecting a win over USA at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.
Harry Kane has been cleared to play and he’ll be smarting a little having failed to score any of England’s six against Iran.
The England captain doesn’t need much of an invitation to win the odd penalty here and there and given the number of times refs have been pointing to spot in Qatar he looks a good bet to get off the mark at 21/20.
Odds on penalties being awarded have been slashed left right and centre after 9 in the opening 16 matches. Here’s a list of today’s likely penalty takers for each team according to a list published pre-tournament by Yahoo!…
Today’s potential penalty takers (Anytime scorer odds)
- Qatar – Akram Afif
- Senegal – Sadio Mane (missing tournament)
- Netherlands – Memphis Depay
- Ecuador – Enner Valencia
- Wales – Gareth Bale
- Iran – Karim Ansarifard
- England – Harry Kane
- USA – Christian Pulisic
