Good Friday is always a busy day in the Football League calendar and there’s a full card across the Championship, League One and League Two today.
Sheffield United look an obvious choice for punters today at home to bottom side Wigan, but the Latics have shown a marked improvement under Maloney and can’t be written off as relegation-bound just yet despite off-field problems that have seen them docked points recently.
There’s no disgrace in recent defeats to Burnley and West Brom, two of only three losses in their last 11 outings so it might not be a straightforward as the 4/9 on the Blades suggest. Stay clear of any handicap bets and keep United for the accas.
One team who are in Wigan’s sights at the bottom are QPR who’s decline has been spectacular. Rangers were top of the table on October 22 but have since won just two of 23 games and slid to 19th place. They host Preston this afternoon who have lost just one in nine and look generously priced at 2/1.
Ipswich Town are the form team in League One and if Sheffield Wednesday’s poor form continues they could yet catch up with the Owls at the top of the table.
It’s now seven wins in a row for the Tractor Boys who are unbeaten in 11 in the league and they should make it 8 in a row at home to Wycombe today. Add them to the aforementioned Sheffield United for an even money double.
Ahead of the big Glasgow Derby on Saturday there’s another at Firhill where it’s last chance saloon for Partick Thistle to stay in the hunt for the title. Defeat to Queen’s Park would see them slip points behind the Spiders, however, a win for the Jags would put them within three points.
Queen’s Park are hanging on to top spot, but only just. Two successive defeats have allowed Dundee to move to within a point with a game in hand so Owen Coyle’s men cannot afford another slip-up with only five games remaining.
Thistle put five past hapless Cove Rangers last weekend but they’ve been too inconsistent this season to expect them to follow that up.
Queen’s Park have had the upper hand in the three meetings so far this season winning 3-2, 4-0 and 2-0 already and we’re not quite prepared to write them off, not at 13/5, to make it four out of four.
