Sheffield Wednesday finished the season like a train and only narrowly missed out on promotion back to the Championship, but they’re in good shape to set-up a trip to Wembley and ultimately claim a place in the second tier once more.
The Owls’ 96 points tally would’ve been enough to win them the League One title in the last three (46-game) seasons so they can feel themselves a little unlucky to have to go through the play-off process this time around.
They finished a whopping 19 points ahead of tonight’s opponents Peterborough, who sneaked into 6th place at the death.
Ironically it was Wednesday’s win over Derby that helped them into the last play-off spot in the final game of the season.
Jonson Clarke-Harris notched his 26th goal of the season for Posh as they beat and he’ll be the man Wednesday will need to keep quiet tonight.
Bet365 have the Owls as marginal favourites for this one at 13/8 versus the 7/4 on Peterborough. To progress from the tie its 4/7 Wednesday, 5/4 Posh.
There’s sure to be some twists and turns along the way but the 6/4 on Sheffield Weds to gain promotion looks more than fair given the form they’ve found at the most important stage of the season and they’re good enough to get a win at 13/8. Better still is the 10/11 at SBK on the Owls in the Draw No Bet market.
It’s a weekend of Glasgow Derbies and although the big one might be at Ibrox on Saturday the most important one is between Queen’s Park and Partick Thistle tonight.
Thistle appeared to be in command of the play-off tie on Tuesday night, 3-1 up heading in to the last 10 minutes, only to concede twice as Queen’s Park drew level but Brian Graham fired home from close-range to give the Jags a slender advantage ahead of tonight’s second leg at the Spiders’ temporary home, Ochilview.
Concern for Queen’s Park manager Owen will be that they’ve shipped nine goals in their last two outings but on the positive side they’ve rediscovered their touch in front of goal, scoring six in those two games having only scored four in the six matches prior to that.
The Jags are now unbeaten in seven and if they can extend that run to eight they’ll be the ones who’ll meet Ayr United in the play-off semi-final. They’re 2/5 to avoid defeat and 29/20 to win. Queens are 7/4 to claim the win. The away goals rule does not apply so a single-goal victory for the hosts will take the tie to extra-time.
After sharing seven goals on Tuesday we could be in for another goalfest tonight as Queen’s Park have to go for it. Over 2.5 Goals pays 7/10. Add in BTTS and it’s 10/11.
