The Championship is where it’s at on Friday night and we should be in for a cracker in front of the Sky Sports cameras at Turf Moor between Burnley and West Bromwich Albion.
West Brom have been brilliant under Carlos Corberán who has utterly transformed their season. The Baggies were bottom of the table after the Spaniard’s first match in charge but a sensational run of nine wins in ten games has seen them race up the table and into the play-off places. A win tonight could take them third!
But this will be their toughest test to date, away to Championship leaders Burnley, who themselves have been in terrific form.
Like Corberán, Vincent Kompany has revolutionised the Clarets following their relegation from the Premier League last season. Educated at the Guardiola school of football, the Belgian has stamped his own possession-based style of football on the club and it’s paid dividends big time.
Just two league defeats all season has put the Turf Moor side in pole position for an immediate return to the top flight. They’re five points clear at the top and 16 points ahead of the pack that occupy the play-off places.
They’ve been almost faultless at home where they’re unbeaten in 14, taking 34 points from a possible 42 so this is a massive test for the visitors.
As you’d expect, the league leaders are favourites at home, priced up at 11/10 for the win while West Brom are 11/4. Burnley’s home form allied to their superior goalscoring record would suggest that they might prove too strong for the in-form West Brom.
On the goals front the Baggies have scored 10 in their last three outings but seven of those have come in their two FA Cup matches against national League side Chesterfield. Prior to that it was three in their previous four.
Two of the last three meetings have been goalless with just six goals scored in the last five meetings so it could be a low-scorer. With both sides out to protect their good run of form a stalemate at half-time has some appeal at 13/8.
In tonight’s other game from the Championship, second-placed Sheffield United host Hull City who having been proving hard to beat recently. The Tigers are unbeaten in six (DWWDDD) but the Blades are flying, especially at home and should land the spoils at 8/13.
In Germany, it’s 3rd v 1st in the table and it should provide plenty of goals. The last five meetings between RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich have produced 25 goals (3-3, 0-1, 1-4, 3-2, 3-5). Over 2.5 is only 2/5 but it’s 11/10 for there to be two or more goals in the first half.
