After the highs of a double cup winning season last term St Johnstone now have just 180 minutes to preserve their top flight status in Scotland.
An 11th placed finish meant they were destined for a two-legged play-off with a team from the Championship who were hoping to get promoted.
Inverness are the team in question after they saw off Partick Thistle and Arbroath in the earlier play-off ties and they host the Saints at Caledonian Stadium tonight.
The bookies seem convinces that St Johnstone will be a Premiership team next season and have them at 2/5 to win on aggregate whereas Inverness are 7/4 to prevail over the two legs.
However it’s the Highlanders who are favourites to take a first leg lead at 17/10. The Saints are 15/8 to put themselves in pole position with a win this evening.
Caley Thistle come in to the game in good shape off the back of a solid end to the season, in which they won 19 points from a possible 24, and those play-off wins although it took a penalty shoot-out to edge past Arbroath when they were down to nine men, following two 0-0 stalemates.
A much-changed Saints side were thumped 4-0 in their final Premiership match but Callum Davidson won’t be overly concerned with that result as his eyes have been firmly focused on tonight since his side’s play-off fate was confirmed.
The Jags will make a tough evening though and goals could be thin on the ground. Under 2.5 Goals is priced up at just 1/2 and that’s no real surprise considering the Saints only mustered 24 goals in their 38 league matches.
Callum Davidson will be happy to get back down the road to Perth with his side still in the tie for Monday’s second leg and he could set up to stifle Billy Dodds’ side. That could lead to a cagey first leg and we could see a repeat of those goalless draws between Caley and Arbroath with No Goalscorer priced at 11/2. No goals in the first 45 mins also appeals at 11/8.
