The Tartan Army have invaded London and they’re praying for a minor miracle at Wembley tonight.
The Scots have been written off by just about every pundit ahead of an historic clash with England in Group D and the bookies aren’t giving them much of a chance to pull off a surprise result either. Marathonbet go 10/1 for Steve Clarke’s men to win, making them one of the biggest priced outsiders in the group stages to date.
The same firm are also best priced on an England win at 4/11 with some bookies as short as 1/3 for Gareth Southgate’s side who have an excellent record at Wembley.
Steve Clarke was a master at getting results against the odds with his Kilmarnock side but a victory for the Scots tonight would go down as his greatest result as a manager.
It’s now just one win in 11 in this fixture for Scotland but they go in to the Lion’s Den this time with a squad peppered with Premier League quality. However they do lack match-winners and there’s still question marks over the centre of defence.
There’s no denying the quality England have got in forward areas and that could be the deciding factor. The Scots shipped two goals against Czech Republic and recently against the Dutch in a warm-up match and will do well to keep Kane, Foden, Rashford etc at bay.
Don’t miss SlipsTips’ best bet for the big game which pays 19/20.
The other match in Group D sees Croatia play Czech Republic at Hampden Park. The Czechs will be bouyant after that win over Scotland but the stats, 19 shots conceded, will be of particular concern. Croatia know they need to take something from the game and plenty of punters will fancy the 23/20 about the World Cup 2018 runners-up.
The afternoon kick-off takes place in St Petersburg and both sides have the chance to book their place in the knock-out stages. Sweden’s creditable 0-0 draw with Spain puts them in a good position, but it’ll all be for nothing if they don’t beat Slovakia who got their campaign off to a great start with a 2-1 over 10-man Poland.
