Friday nights can only mean one thing, we’re off to Ireland for some summer football in the Emerald Isle.
We should be in for a cracking game at Oriel Park tonight where the SSE Airtricity League’s top two go head-to-head. Hosts Dundalk trail their guests, Shamrock Rovers, by eight points but with a game in hand that lead could potentially be cut to two points.
Stephen O’Donnell’s side are the form team in Ireland and have won six of their last seven, in fact Rovers are the only team to get the better of them in their last 11.
After a 0-0 draw between the sides back in March, in which Dundalk could’ve won at the death, it took a solitary Daniel Mândroiu strike to separate them in April but the Dubliners have failed to win on their last three visits to Oriel Park (D1 L2).
A bumper crowd is expected this evening and that could fire Dundalk to victory at 33/10 with SBK. That looks a generous price conisdering there’s been little between the teams so far and given the home side’s form, especially on their own turf where they’re unbeaten this season (W7 D2). Dundalk on the Double Chance market at even money also appeals.
Derry City‘s match against Drogheda looks like a trappy affair. They’re just 2/7 to win but they went in to the international break without a win in six (D3 L3), a run that’s seen them slip nine points off the lead having topped the table for the majority of the opening third of the season. Drogheda’s recent win at Shamrock Rovers should serve as enough warning to punters that Derry shouldn’t be 2/7 shots and are probably best avoided.
St Patricks look a bit more likely to get the job done at home to UCD. They’ve been a bit hit and miss this season but they’ve a good record in this fixture, winning four, drawing two and losing just one of the most recent meetings between the sides. At just 2/5 to win they could be worth taking a punt on to be winning at half-time and full time at 11/10.
