Thursday’s Football Bet of the Day see’s me focus on two sides who should manage at least two strikes. Both Basel and Bayer Leverkusen have been in fine goalscoring form and I expect them to add to their goal tally on Thursday evening.
Basel vs Kairat Almaty
🇪🇺 Conference League
⏰ Thursday 30th September, 20:00
Kazakhstan side Kairat Almaty travel to Switzerland to take on Basel at St Jakob-Park. Both sides are looking for their first win in the Conference League as they both drew their first games.
Basel kicked off their Conference League campaign with a 0-0 draw away to Azerbaijani side Qarabag. Basel had to go through three rounds of qualifying just to make the group stages and done so by knocking out Partizani Tirana, Újpest and Swedish side Hammarby on penalties. Basel won all three of their home qualifiers, scoring an impressive 10 goals. Basel are still unbeaten domestically and are four points clear of Young Boys at the top, albeit the Champions League side have a game in hand. Basel have scored 22 goals in just eight league games, with 15 of those coming in their four home games.
Kazakhstan champions Kairat began their Conference League campaign with a 0-0 draw over Cypriot side Omonoia Nicosia. After knocking out Maccabi Haifa, Kairat were knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers by Red Star Belgrade, losing the away tie 5-0. Kairat were then knocked out of the Europa League qualifiers by Armenian minnows Alashkert, losing 3-2 in Armenia. Even in their domestic league, Kairat have a poor away record, winning only three of their 11 matches which has saw them keep only three clean sheets also.
Celtic vs Bayer Leverkusen
🇪🇺 Europa League
⏰ Thursday 30th September, 20:00
Celtic host German side Bayer Leverkusen at Celtic Park on Thursday evening. Both sides have made contrasting starts to the group as Leverkusen won their first match and Celtic lost theirs.
The Ange Postecoglou revolution has someone fallen apart in recent weeks with his Celtic side suffering their worst start to a domestic season in 23 years. After throwing away a two goal lead to lose 4-3 to Real Betis in Seville, Celtic have only won one of their next three games and that was against lower league Raith Rovers, suffering a 1-0 defeat to lowly Livingston and being held at home to Dundee United. Celtic’s defence has looked vulnerable all season and they’ve already conceded 11 goals in their seven European games. Celtic had a disastrous Europa League campaign last year which saw them conceding a whopping 19 goals in the group stages, conceding 2+ in all six matches.
Leverkusen’s 1-0 win over Mainz at the weekend put them in 2nd place and three points behind Champions Bayern Munich. That was their third win in a row in all competitions, which started with a 2-1 win in their group opener against Ferencváros. Leverkusen have already banged in 21 goals in their eight competitive matches this season and will relish coming up against Celtic’s leaky defence. Leverkusen won their group in last Season’s Europa League, winning five of their six matches, scoring 21 times.
Bet of the Day
Basel have made an impressive start to the season which is largely due to their strong home record at St Jakob-Park. Basel are unbeaten in their seven home matches this season, winning six and scoring an eye catching 25 goals. They should have too much firepower for a Kairat side who tend to struggle on their travels. Bayer Leverkusen travel to Glasgow in good form and should be far too strong for an out of form Celtic side. Gerardo Seoane’s side have been scoring plenty of goals this season and should manage at least two against a rather vulnerable Celtic defence.
- Basel to Score 2+
- Leverkusen to Score 2+
- Double Pays 7/4 (William Hill)
