Wednesday’s Football Bet of the Day sees me once more focus on the Champions League play-offs and there’s one match in particular I like the look of for goals at both ends.
Qarabağ vs Viktoria Plzeň
🇪🇺 Champions League
⏰ Wednesday 17th August, 17:45
Czech champions Viktoria Plzeň travel to Baku this evening to take on Azerbaijani champions Qarabağ in the first-leg of their Champions League play-off.
Qarabağ have began the defence of their league crown with successive victories, as they followed up a 3-1 win at home to Sabail by winning 0-2 at Sumqayit on Saturday. Gurban Gurbanov’s side began their qualifying campaign with a 5-2 aggregate success over Polish side Lech Poznan, despite losing the first-leg 1-0 in Poland. They followed that up by knocking out Swiss champions Zürich 5-4 on aggregate and despite only drawing 1-1 at home, The Horsemen surprisingly knocked-out Ferencváros by winning 1-3 in Budapest last week. Qarabağ have found the back of the net in each of their last five European qualifiers, scoring 14 times but they have failed to record a clean sheet in any of their six qualifiers this season.
Viktoria Plzeň maintained their unbeaten start to their domestic campaign at the weekend, as they followed up a 2-1 victory at home to Pardubice by also winning 1-2 at Hradec Králové. After opening their qualifying campaign with a 7-1 success over Finnish champions HJK, Michal Bílek’s side then knocked-out last seasons giant-killers Sheriff Tiraspol by winning both legs 2-1. Plzeň have found the back of the net 17 times in their opening seven competitive fixtures this season, scoring on multiple occasions in all seven. However, they’ve only recorded one clean sheet in those matches, with that coming at home to HJK in the second qualifying round.
Bet of the Day
Both Qarabağ and Viktoria Plzeň have performed really well to reach this stage of the competition and I’m expecting an exciting tie between the two, starting in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku on Wednesday evening. Qarabağ have already knocked-out Lech Poznan, Zürich and Ferencváros, whilst the Czech side have saw off HJK and Sheriff.
Gurban Gurbanov’s hosts have scored 14 goals in their last five qualifiers and they’ll be confident of netting against a Plzeň defence that’s kept just one clean sheet in their seven competitive matches this season. Michal Bílek’s visitors have actually scored at least twice in every match this season and I fancy them also to get on the scoresheet against a Qarabağ defence that’s conceded in all six of their European qualifiers this season.
