Euro 2020 Heads Into Knockout Phase

25/06/2021 admin

After an exciting and enthralling group stage at Euro 2020, 16 teams have managed to battle through to the first knockout stage of the competition and it promises to be another incident-packed part of the tournament.

Another Early Exit for Scots

With just eight teams being eliminated at the group stage, it was thought Scotland would take the opportunity to advance from Group D and book their place in the last-16 stage at Euro 2020.

However, Steve Clarke’s men, making their first appearance at a major event since 1998, only managed to take one point from their three matches as they finished rock-bottom, heading home early once again.

Turkey, Finland, Russia, North Macedonia, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, who drew with world champions France and Germany in Group F, were the other countries to suffer an early exit.

England Draw the Old Enemy

England managed to top Group D with seven points, keeping three clean sheets in two victories and one draw, and they will now take on Germany for a place in the quarter-finals.

The Three Lions, who are 13/2 to win the Euros, haven’t necessarily set the world on fire with their performances but they will be confident of overcoming Joachim Low’s side when they meet at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday (17:00 KO).

Germany were on course to be eliminated before scoring late on to draw with Hungary and secure second place in Group F and Die Mannschaft are 7/1 to go on and lift the trophy for the first time since 1996.

France Favourites for European Crown

Reigning world champions France are also yet to hit their straps but they did manage to finish top of Group F, beating Germany 1-0 before securing back-to-back draws against Hungary and Portugal.

Didier Deschamps’ men are 7/2 favourites to win the tournament and they have been drawn against Switzerland in the last-16 stage, with either Spain or Croatia waiting in the quarter-finals.

Italy Looking Great Under Mancini

The most impressive team during the tournament so far has been, by some distance, Italy, who have won all three group matches to nil and are on an incredible 30-match unbeaten streak.

Roberto Mancini’s side, a 6/1 chance to lift the trophy, face Austria in the last 16 and the winner of that tie will take on either Belgium or Portugal, which is arguably the most exciting tie.

Dragons Backing up 2016 Run

Wales made it to the semi-finals at Euro 2016 and they have managed to reach the last-16 stage this time around as they prepare to take on Denmark, who have been through an emotional roller-coaster at this event.

The Dragons are a huge 80/1 chance to win the tournament, while the Danes are available at 18/1. The winner of this tie will take on either the Netherlands or Czech Republic in the next round.

Ronaldo Leading the Way

Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo has been in fine form for Portugal and he has already hit the back of the net five times, extending his record as the European Championships all-time record goalscorer to 14.

The 36-year-old is the 20/29 favourites to finish top of the scoring charts at Euro 2020, while Georginio Wijnaldum, Patrik Schick, Romelu Lukaku and Emil Forsberg, who all have three goals, are priced at 16/1, 20/1, 6/1 and 50/1 respectively.

Italy’s Ciro Immobile has two strikes to his name and is available at 12/1, while England’s Raheem Sterling is also on the same mark and can be backed at 25/1 to win the Golden Boot.
