England were hugely disappointing from an attacking perspective against Scotland and they failed to produce too many significant moments of magic in the final third. The Three Lions hit the woodwork in the first half, yet they rarely looked like scoring after the break. Although Scotland’s tactics must take some of the credit, Gareth Southgate must unleash his more attack-minded players ahead of this third Group D contest. A point would send England through, although that would leave the Czechs sitting top.
The Czech Republic have impressed so far and although they only took a point from Croatia, it was enough to move them to the summit. A point would be enough for both sides to go through and although we aren’t suggesting there will be any kind of collaboration across the 90 minutes, if it’s 1-1 going into the final five minutes, both managers could potentially instruct their teams to tighten up and to avoid giving anything away.
Although Czech Republic’s opening couple of games have both featured an accumulative four goals, there has been no shortage of efforts in those matches. There were a combined 22 shots in their 1-1 draw against Croatia and an impressive 29 throughout the 90 minutes against Scotland. With England likely to substantially contribute to the shot-count, this could be a decent watch.
The Three Lions looked most dangerous from set-pieces against Scotland and although they only clocked up six corners (Scotland had five), this could be their most likely route to goal. Czech Republic have averaged around five corners per game so far at this tournament, so we should see at least 10 here.
