England Euro 2020 squad predictions, tips and odds

England will enter next year’s European Championship as one of the favourites to lift the famous Henri Delaunay Trophy, though Gareth Southgate will need to start the tournament with the strongest squad possible if the Three Lions are to roar to glory.

While established regulars like Harry Maguire, Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane are certain to make the cut, Southgate faces several other selection headaches ahead of finalising his 23-man roster for the competition next summer.

With the pool of talent to fish from as deep as it has been in a generation, England have top-players competing for every available position and with the battle for places expected to be intense, a number of high-profile performers look set to miss out.

Over the next eight months, Southgate will have a number of key selection questions to answer – like who from Kieran Trippier, Reece James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka will support Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back?

Or which centre-forward from Tammy Abraham, Danny Ings, Callum Wilson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be chosen to provide competition for skipper Harry Kane?

Ex-Man Utd academy graduate and current Toffees defensive lynchpin Michael Keane pushed himself firmly into the reckoning for England in 2019, winning five caps for the Three Lions during a campaign of heavy international involvement.

As part of an Everton outfit that are rapidly improving under Carlo Ancelotti, Keane’s consistent performances should earn even more of the spotlight this term, and the dependable 27-year-old wields the kind of composure and quality in possession that Gareth Southgate craves.

Jude Bellingham – 7/2

Midfield wonderkid Jude Bellingham swapped Birmingham for Borussia Dortmund and the Bundesliga this summer, where the precociously talented teenager will hope to follow along the same vertical development trajectory as compatriot Jadon Sancho.

The 17-year-old has already started for times for BVB this term, and Bellingham already looks like being a mainstay in the Dortmund engine room for the entire campaign. Bukayo Saka – 3/1

Blossoming Arsenal starlet Bukayo Saka was called up to the England squad for the first time this month for the Three Lions’ matches against Wales, Belgium and Denmark, and the 19-year-old looks set for a lengthy international career.

Alongside his highly polished technical skillset, Saka’s versatility means he can be deployed in a number of positions – and that flexibility is likely to appeal to Southgate.

Saka is expected to make the transition from promising squad member to regular starter for the Gunners too this season, and the London-born flier could play his way into European Championship contention come next summer.

Ollie Watkins – 3/1

We’ve included Ollie Watkins as an interesting outside prospect for England honours next year after the new Aston Villa recruit showcased his superb finishing against current Premier League champions Liverpool.

The Villains raised a few eyebrows when they sanctioned a massive £28m move for Watkins in the summer, who before this season, hadn’t been tested at the top level.

However, five goals in his first six Villa appearances – which included a stunning hattrick against Liverpool – provided an early indicator to suggest that Villa’s outlay might feel like a bargain pretty quickly.

With competition for a spot among Southgate’s attacking options looking stiff, Watkins will need to work his way up the pecking order, though the particular set of poaching skills he possesses could stand him apart from this rivals.
