But it was Michael van Gerwen (MVG) that won the European Darts Open on Sunday and he put up some striking performances along the way. In five matches, including the final where he dispatched Dimitri Van den Burgh, MVG posted averages of 102, 105 and 113.
The Dutchman had a dreadful 2021 but he is back to his best and the history books show he is a juggernaut once he starts to roll. Peter Wright should have his work cut out to contain his old rival on Thursday.
But instead of heading to the win market – where MVG is top-priced 4/7 to win – playing the three-time World Champion in the 180 market rates a better play. He can be backed at 6/4 to post the most maximum scores.
