Bundesliga: Who are the Winners and Losers?

06/10/2020 admin

The summer transfer window has officially shut in the Bundesliga, so now is a great time to review the the top teams and see how their wheelings and dealings worked out for them.

Jadon Sancho, who was one of the biggest names regularly mentioned in the transfer market, will not be going anywhere anytime soon as Borussia Dortmund remain adamant on keeping him.

Meanwhile, fellow contenders in Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig have reloaded despite losing some of their best players to Premier League clubs.

There’s more to that to where it came from as SBOTOP go into detail on how the top teams in the Bundesliga fared during the summer.

Bayern Munich

The Bavarian giants are suddenly looking like mere mortals in the past few fixtures, but they still are favoured by the Bundesliga 2020 odds to win the championship.

Over the summer, Bayern Munich’s depth at midfield took a hit when the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Philippe Coutinho, and Ivan Perisic left to join other clubs.

However, Hansi Flick’s side retooled his lineup by bringing in some interesting pieces that can contribute right away.

Backing up Manuel Neuer between the sticks will be Alexander Nubel, who played for Schalke last term, while Leroy Sane, Douglas Costa, and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting were brought in to reinforce their already-vaunted attack.

Overall, this Bundesliga championship is for Bayern Munich’s to lose.

Borussia Dortmund

While keeping Jadon Sancho is quite an achievement in itself, the Yellow Wall just got even better with their new signings.

Jude Bellingham is a fine addition to their pacey attack while the likes of Felix Passlack and Thomas Meunier make them stronger at the full-back positions.

Add Bellingham to a core consisting of Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus, Erling Haaland, and Gio Reyna, they should continue to torch backlines with numerous Bundesliga 2020 highlights.

Unfortunately, they weren’t able to retain Achraf Hakimi since he went to Inter, but Emre Can has the tools to fill in the void.

Lucien Favre may be on to something with their summer moves and they should be a force to be reckoned with this term.

RB Leipzig

When Timo Werner left for Chelsea, many have wondered on how RB Leipzig would fare in the 2020/21 Bundesliga season. However, they have proven doubters wrong as they stand on top of the league standings with seven points as of this writing.

In their first three fixtures of the season, Julian Nagelsmann’s side has done a great job in scoring by committee as a way to compensate for their big star loss.

In addition, the Die Roten Bullen were able to ease their new reinforcements into their roster seamlessly.

They will rely on youth once more with the likes of Hwang Hee-chan, Justin Kluivert, Jean-Kevin Augustin, and Alexander Sorloth to support an attacking front that already has Yussuf Poulsen, Dani Olmo, and Emil Forsberg.

RB Leipzig were able to retain Angelino after a successful loan last season and they’ve brought in Benjamin Henrichs from AS Monaco to add more quality in the full-back position.

If Leipzig can gel right away, they should be in the title contention once more this season.

Bayer Leverkusen

Unlike RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen have yet to adjust to the loss of Kai Havertz, who coincindentally joined Timo Werner in Stamford Bridge.

Their lack of scoring punch was evident in the first three games of their campaign as they were unable to score more than once, and they have yet to win as well.

Besides Kai Havertz, Leverkusen also lost Kevin Volland, who was their second leading scorer last term. The 28-year-old striker moved on to AS Monaco after an acrimonious exit from Die Werkself.

Peter Bosz would need all hands on deck if they can keep up with their Champions League aspirations, but it will be much easier said than done.

Serie A

Borussia Monchengladbach

From the outside looking in, it appears that Borussia Monchengladbach didn’t do any favours for themselves as they’ve had a relatively quiet transfer window.

All they did during the summer was to bring in some young prospects to try and add to the current core, but they aren’t ready to contribute much for the Marco Rose-managed squad just yet.

Some signings include Jordan Beyer, Valentino Lazaro, Jan Olschowsky, Hannes Wolf, Julio Villalba, and Joe Scally – all of which are considered as long-term projects for the Foals.

After failing to register a win in the first two fixtures, Gladbach got back up with a needed win versus Koln.

Just like last season, they should hover around the fourth to sixth spots at the table, and they are expected to secure a Champions League or an Europa League berth by season’s end.
