VfL Wolfsburg vs Borussia Monchengladbach
VfL Wolfsburg have officially become one of the hottest clubs in the Bundesliga. By winning six of their last seven league games, Die Wolfe have moved up to a few spots in the German top-flight standings.
And this Sunday evening, they will look to extend their unbeaten run as they host Borussia Monchengladbach in what will be a stern test for them.
While Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig have cemented their championship contending status, the Wolves have been raising eyebrows since they have been punching above their weight.
Oliver Glasner’s side is perched at the third spot with 38 points, which is only three points adrift to RB Leipzig.
Meanwhile, their opponents in Borussia Monchengladbach have some catching up to do since they’ve fallen from their usual placing.
Marco Rose’s group missed an opportunity last week to go to as high as the fifth spot to level with Bayer Leverkusen. And now they remain at seventh with 32 points to level with Borussia Dortmund.
This particular matchup will be supplied by high-quality players capable of producing topnotch Bundesliga 2021 highlights. But which stars will shine the brightest come Sunday?
Talking points
VfL Wolfsburg are smelling blood
Die Wolfe continue to show their grit and teeth, and that has resulted to an undefeated run of six games.
After losing to Borussia Dortmund to start the year, VfL Wolfsburg got back on track with four wins and two draws.
One of the secrets to Die Wolfe’s resurgence is because of their unrelenting backline. John Brooks and Maxence Lacroix have added granite to their defencive foundation, while full-backs Kevin Mbabu and Paulo Otavio have enough guile and energy to stop opposing wingers.
They are the second-best team in the Bundesliga for goals conceded as they have only surrendered 19 goals as of this writing.
During their six-game undefeated run, only RB Leipzig were able to score against them and they haven’t conceded anything ever since.
Other than their rock solid defence, their efforts on the other side of pitch has been bearing fruit too.
Oliver Glasner’s side is fresh from a thumping win over Augsburg in the last time out as Wout Weghorst and Ridle Baku provided the goals at the WWK Arena.
Weghorst scored his 14th Bundesliga goal of the season during the said fixture, which is a record for a Wolfsburg player at this point of the season.
Meanwhile, centre-back John Brooks has scored two goals in his last 11 appearances and he is fast approaching his total of three goals during the 2019 season.
With the Wolves firing on all cylinders, expect them to remain hungry as they continue to punch above their weight.
Borussia Monchengladbach shouldn’t be overlooked
The Foals have been banging in form over this past month but it was momentarily halted when they lost against FC Koln last weekend.
Koln winger Elvis Rexhbecaj scored a brace while Florian Neuhaus’ early goal proved to be a consolation as Gladbach missed their chance to move up.
Like VfL Wolfsburg, Gladbach have a formidable rotation that can cause major problems for the former.
Alassane Plea and Marcus Thuram have been in fine form since their returns, while skipper Lars Stindl has punched in nine goals and four assists already.
Florian Neuhaus has been turning heads with his technical elegance in the midfield, and he will play a huge role to his team’s fortunes moving forward.
History
Borussia Monchengladbach badly need a win for this game in order to somehow tip the scales into their favour.
In the head-to-heads, the Wolves and the Foals have clashed in 39 matches to which the former owns the upper hand. Die Wolfe have won in 20 games, while the Foals won 11 times along with eight draws.
Gladbach are winless in their last 15 matches to Wolfsburg in the league. Their previous away triumph was a 3-1 victory last November 2003.
Sunday will be a big day for certain Gladbach players as it will be Florian Neuhaus 100th appearance for the team as well as Matthias Ginter’s 250th league appearance overall.

February 14, 1:00(GMT+8) |
A belter of a contest is expected for this certain matchup, as per the latest Bundesliga 2021 odds here at SBOTOP.
VfL Wolfsburg are priced at 2.49, while Borussia Monchengladbach are not far behind at 2.82 and chances for a draw are at 3.20 in the 1×2 market.
However, given how Die Wolfe have been performing on both ends of the pitch lately, it would be very hard to bet against them especially against a team who is coming off of a loss.
Team manager Oliver Glasner should be given kudos for instilling a winning mentality to his boys, and it is looking likely that their unbeaten run wouldn’t be halted anytime soon.
