Werder Bremen vs Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich’s title chase heads North on Saturday when Hansi Flick takes his side to Bremen in search of a crucial three points.
Bundesliga Werder Bremen vs FC Bayern is a huge game in the scheme of the 2020/21 German title race, which is closer than it has been in years.
Die Bayern have plenty of work to do to secure a ninth successive Bundesliga. They are top of the table but are only two points ahead of RB Leipzig. Die Werderaner are dangerous customers, though. They are comfortably in midtable, 11 points clear of trouble and not out of the race for a Europa League place.
Head coach Florian Kohfeldt won’t allow his players to head to the beach early; if seventh place is enough to qualify for Europe then they are only five points adrift… and the visitors have no fear of reputation.
Talking Points
Dangerous Werder
The pre-match Werder Bremen vs FC Bayern betting odds back a Bayern win, but Kohfeldt’s team is in good shape and have recently proved they can stand toe-to-toe with the league’s high-flyers.
Two weeks ago, Die Werderaner inflicted a 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, just six days after Frankfurt had beaten Bayern by the same scoreline. Goals from Theodor Gebre Selassie and Josh Sargent ended Frankfurt’s long unbeaten run which had taken them into the top four.
The result showed the character of Bremen, coming back from a 4-0 hammering to Hoffenheim the previous week.
American forward Josh Sargent is joint-top scorer alongside Niclas Fullrug on four goals but the team is not shot-shy, and the resurgent form of the speedy Milot Rashica will give Die Bayern plenty to think about.
But Kohfeldt knows his defence will come under a serious examination from the champions. A back three of Marco Friedl, Omer Toprak and Milos Velijovic did the business against Frankfurt, while Swedish international wing-back Ludwig Augustinsson is also a class act.
Bayern back in the groove
Die Bayern seem to have overcome their recent stutter and come into the game on the back of three consecutive victories, scoring 13 goals and conceding four.
Hansi Flick’s side went on a long winning run to take the league last term and they might need to repeat that form to hold off a relentless Leipzig. Robert Lewandowski has been in brilliant form again and Flick knows he can rely on his Polish hitman.
Lewandowski scored his 31st goal of the season in Bayern’s 4-2 victory over Dortmund and he has the Golden Boot pretty much wrapped up again. Alongside Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry scored a brace in the recent 5-1 demolition of Cologne, while Leroy Sane was on target as Bayern saw off Lazio in the Champions League.
Bremen’s defence has plenty to think about.
History
The Bavarians haven’t had it all their own way in the head-to-head Werder Bremen vs FC Bayern results, although they have won almost two-thirds of the meetings since 1992.
Bayern have won 41 of the 66 clashes while Die Werderaner have won 15 and there have been 10 draws. Last season, Flick’s men did the double with a hard-fought 1-0 win in Bremen and a 6-1 exhibition of scoring in Munich.
But the most recent meeting between the two in November 2020 ended in a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena. Sargent teed up Maxi Eggestein to give the visitors a surprise lead before France striker Kingsley Coman headed home Leon Goretzka’s cross to earn a point.
This could be another tough test for Die Bayern. Bremen haven’t lost in five matches at the Weserstadion and are a far cry from the side which narrowly avoided relegation last term, when they survived in the play-off against FC Heidenheim on away goals.

Here at SBOTOP, we’re confident that Bayern can overcome this tricky hurdle and we’re offering 10.12 for a Bremen victory, 5.40 for a draw and 1.25 a Bayern win.
The hosts have been in good form over the last three games, winning two and drawing one after their defeat to Hoffenheim. In a similar vein, Bayern lost to Frankfurt four games ago, but in the intervening three they have been simply devastating, sweeping away all before them.
With the final run-in approaching, this is their time, and I think we’ll see another ruthless display from the champions.
