Koln vs Borussia Monchengladbach
The third matchday of the 2020/21 Bundesliga season poses a challenge for Koln and Borussia Monchengladbach as they are both searching for their first win in their respective campaigns.
Both have yet to grab a victory as they stumbled upon some teams who are already in good form, and now they find themselves at the bottom half of the league standings.
Gladbach are coming off of a loss against Dortmund in the opening day, and then they failed to close out Union Berlin in a fixture that ended in a draw.
On the other hand, Koln were beaten by a streaking Hoffenheim club and then they suffered a tough loss against the newly-promoted Arminia last weekend.
It might be still too early in this campaign, but for sure both of these clubs are coming in with a huge sense of urgency to try and get some points.
This figures to be a close affair as both are evenly matched on paper according to the SBOTOP betting tips.
But before we place our bets on who will win this fixture, let’s examine both of these teams here in our match preview.
Talking Points
Koln need more time to gel
The Billy Goats have yet to win a game this season because they have yet to get themselves fully acclimated with each other.
It can be noted that prior to this season, Koln had a significant roster turnover.
Jhon Cordoba, who led the team in scoring last season with 13 goals, left to join Hertha BSC. In return, the Billy Goats added Ondrej Duda to add depth to their midfield.
They’ve also added a striker into their lineup by in Sebastian Andersson. The Swedish forward played for Union Berlin last term and he led them in scoring with 12 goals.
It remains to be seen on what Andersson and Duda can bring to the table for Koln in the long-run, but their recent performances have shown glimpses of it.
Sebastian Andersson quickly made his presence felt when he scored Koln’s first goal of the season against Hoffenheim, while Ondrej Duda showed toughness in the middle despite getting a yellow card.
These two new additions should continue to improve under team manager Markus Gisdol and they are expected to hover around between the ninth and 11th spots in this campaign.
Gladbach slowly working their key players back into full shape
For the Foals to get back to where they once were last season, much of their success will depend on the performances of their stars.
They were in the top four last season and they almost crashed out of their Champions League spot when their strikers in Alassane Plea and Marcus Thuram were sidelined due to injuries.
The French duo accounted for 20 goals and 18 assists last term while they got ample support from their Swedish combo in Denis Zakaria and Breel Embolo, who put up fantastic seasons as well.
Unlike Koln, Gladbach kept their core intact and team boss Marco Rose expects bigger things from his young upstarts this season.
Although the results weren’t favourable for Gladbach in the past few weeks, seeing Plea and Thuram back on the pitch was an encouraging sign for the team.
When these two are in full strength, they can definitely pour in a lot of goals along with some topnotch Bundesliga 2020 highlights.
History
In the 27 matches that they’ve locked horns in the Bundesliga, Borussia Monchengladbach have had the significant edge.
They’ve won in 15 games compared to Koln’s six along with six draws.
Last season, the Foals achieved a double over the Billy Goats with an aggregate tally of 3-1.
Games between Koln and Gladbach are low-scoring by nature as they’ve reached more than three goals only three years ago.
Betting Tip
Koln vs Borussia Monchengladbach | Borussia Monchengladbach Asian Handicap -0.25 @ 1.73 | |
October 3, 21:30 (GMT+8) |
For this game, Borussia Monchengladbach are backed to win via a slim margin.
Our latest Bundesliga 2020 odds in the 1×2 market have them priced to win at 2.01, while Koln are not far behind at 3.45 and a draw is at 3.55.
Goals won’t come in abundance as shown in their last few fixtures together, so betting on Under 2.50 @ 1.72 is also a good recommendation as well.
While Koln’s lineup is intriguing and capable, a healthy Gladbach squad has been proven to be a top four side in the German top-flight.
The Billy Goats can definitely score some goals, but they can’t afford to get into a shootout with the Foals because of their leaky defence.
Gladbach are primed to win in this fixture, and perhaps this may catapult them back into the Champions League contention sooner or later.
