Over 50,000 fans might well be in attendance to celebrate the oldest international football fixture at Hampden Park tonight but the vast majority will be focused on a match 991km away, where, at the Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo, Norway host Georgia.
A draw there would see Scotland confirmed as the first country to qualify for Euro 2024 from Group A, a measure of how much progress the nation has made under Steve Clarke.
But the bookies aren’t letting them get too carried away, chalking them up as 10/3 shots to defeat the Auld Enemy tonight.
It’s been a long time since the Scots have gone in to this fixture in such good form and Clarke will be keen for them to maintain their momentum, following 11 wins not the bounce, ahead of a trip to Spain in October, which may or may not be meaningful in their qualifying quest.
You have to go back seven meetings to 1999 for Scotland’s last win in this fixture though and it’s the English that hold the upper hand overall with 48 wins to Scotland’s 41.
But Hampden is looking like a fortress under Clarke these days. The Tartan Army have seen their team beaten just once at home in 19 and there’s no doubt they think England are there for the taking this evening.
England’s 1-1 draw with Ukraine on Friday raised more questions than answers for Gareth Southgate especially around his team selection but they’re sitting pretty at the top of Group C and should qualify without too much trouble from here.
With confidence sky high the Scots will be looking to exploit any chinks in the Three Lions’ armour and they can be backed not to lose at even money.
Back to that game in Norway and the hosts know only a win will do to keep their hopes alive. Georgia were thumped 7-1 by Spain on Friday, now they need to keep Erling Haaland quiet. The Manchester City hitman missed the 1-1 draw between the countries back in March but could be the difference tonight. He’s 8/15 to find the net, 2/1 to open the scoring and 8/1 to hit a hat-trick.
There are a few mismatches tonight with Belgium, Spain and Switzerland all at short prices to win over Estonia, Cyprus and Andorra.
All three should win with a bit to spare, backing them on the half-time / full-time market pays 11/10 at Bet365.
