GOALS were pretty thin on the ground on day one of the Women’s World Cup, with co-hosts New Zealand and Australia both claiming 1-0 wins.
But we should get more thrills today as Spain seeks revenge on Costa Rica for a shock 1-1 draw at the 2015 tournament.
That result was a stunner but I’d be surprised if the Spanish didn’t win heavily today, given Costa Rica have lost 4-0 in friendlies to Scotland, the Netherlands and Venezuela in the last year.
Spain finished bottom of their group back in 2015 but fared much better at the last World Cup and were knocked out in the last 16 by eventual winners America.
It was the same story at last summer’s Euros as only a late leveller robbed them of a win over England before the Lionesses won in extra-time.
The bookies make Spain 1/50 favourites today with Costa Rica as big as 175/1 and even the draw paying 60/1.
It’s hard finding value but I like the 6/5 on offer at SkyBet for the Spanish to score a penalty. The player markets are also worth a look, although all Spain’s forwards are heavy odds-on for anytime scorer. Jennifer Hermoso hit a double in their final warm-up game and is 15/8 at SkyBet to grab two or more goals again today.
The Danish season gets underway tonight and Midtjylland will be desperate to atone for a poor campaign that saw them finish a lowly eighth.
The three-time champions kick off with a home game against promoted Hvidovre and are heavy favourites at a best 2/7 with Bet365. The new boys are 11/1 outsiders with the same firm and even the draw is 5/1 at SpreadEx.
Korean striker Gue-Sung Cho is the marquee signing up front for Midtjylland this summer after being linked with Celtic and Watford. He looks decent value for a debut goal at 13/10 (Paddy Power) if he starts.
There’s also a top-flight game in Sweden tonight as IF Brommapojkarna bid to bounce back from their Hacken heartbreak when they host Hammarby.
I backed IF at -2 in the handicap on Saturday and it looked good with the score at 2-2 heading into injury time. But they conceded twice to slump to a fourth consecutive defeat and bust my coupon.
Hammarby have won three of their last four so look decent value at 13/10 (Unibet) to pile on the pain for their hosts tonight
