IT could all have been very different for Rangers this week. Back in May, Aaron Ramsay’s missed penalty handed the Europa League trophy to Eintracht Frankfurt and with it automatic qualification, in pot 1 no less, to the Champions League.
The Germans are taking on European Champions, Real Madrid, in the Super Cup tomorrow night whereas tonight, the Rangers will be fighting for their lives in the competition, attempting to come back from 2-0 down to Union Saint Gilloise to earn themselves a play-off with either PSV or Monaco.
One thing’s for sure, the Gers won’t go down without a fight and their not-so-secret weapon, the Ibrox crowd gives them a fighting chance. It was largely Rangers’ home form which powered them to that Europa League final and they can draw inspiration from a full house in Govan once more.
Captain James Tavernier was the talisman in Rangers’ European run, scoring first in all four of their home knock-out ties. The goals all came early too, each of them inside the first 25 minutes. The full-back has already been on the scoresheet this season, firing in a free-kick to win all three points at Livingston and the fact he’s on penalties for Giovanni van Bronckhurst’s side he’s a lively bet at 15/2 to break the deadlock.
Bet365 usually provide a “goal before x minutes” but there’s none available at the time of writing, however, if we can get 5/6 (usual price) on a goal before 25:00 or higher then it’s worth taking.
Alternatively, Rangers to score in the first half can be backed at 5/6 too.
If you fancy Rangers to turn the tie around they’re a tempting 3/1 with SBK. But the Belgians were no mugs last week and caught a few people by surprise. The Light Blues haven’t quite clicked so a far this season so a big performance is required. It should be a fascinating evening and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if it went the distance.
Penalties? Rangers are 14/1 to win a shoot-out. Aaron Ramsay is no longer at Ibrox after all.
Elsewhere there’s not much else jumping out in the Champions League.
Ferencvaros earned a 1-1 draw in Azerbaijan last week and look backable at 5/4 to finish the job with win tonight.
Bodo/Glimt will probably add to the five they scored against Zalgiris last week. They scored another seven at the weekend and have rattled in 27 in their last five matches. They might rest a few but 5/6 on them to score two or more looks over-priced.
