The first Edinburgh Derby of the season has come around quickly, meaning there’s more than just bragging rights at stake at Easter Road this afternoon.
After opening day wins either side could, in theory, go top of the table with a sizeable enough win. Hibs need to improve on a record that has seen them win just one of the last nine meetings between the sides but all the money has been for the Jambos the past few days. Hibs were favourites earlier in the week but that’s flipped in the other direction and Robbie Neilson’s side are now likely to go off the shorter of the two at 13/8. That feels about right.
Hibs have yet to impress since Lee Johnson’s arrival despite some good-looking signings, including the much-anticipated return of Martin Boyle which will be a big boost for the squad, but he won’t feature today. Hearts, who were the clear third best team in Scotland last season, are widely tipped to be best of the rest once more.
These matches can often be tight affairs but Hearts should edge this one in the lunchtime kick-off.
It’s also hard to ignore Dundee United at a similar price at home to Livingston. Arabs fans enjoyed a memorable night at Tannadice on Thursday when they beat AZ 1-0.The squad will be buzzing after that and hopefully the adrenalin will still be pumping and help them towards three points at 13/8.
The season hasn’t even started and all does not seem well at Leicester City. Kasper Schmeichel, who has been part of the fabric of the club and it’s phenomenal success for 11 years, has departed for Nice and he’ll be a huge loss on and off the park, while Brendan Rodgers is cutting a frustrated figure in his press conferences these days.
The former Celtic gaffer has a long injury list to contend with and has hinted at his dissatisfaction with the club’s movement in the transfer market. This story never ends well.
Brentford are the visitors and could be a bit of value at 27/10. Much has been made of Christian Eriksen’s departure but Brentford were a good team before he arrived and they’re certainly a better squad than when they started last season on fire. They’ve had a good pre-season can take advantage of a slightly troubled Leicester.
