Reds to Ramp up Pressure on City

22/02/2022 admin

Liverpool will be hoping to cut the gap to leaders Manchester City to just three points on Wednesday evening when they play host to relegation-threatened Leeds United at 19:45.

In the two 19:30 games on the same evening, 19th-placed Burnley welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Turf Moor, while 18th-placed Watford take on Crystal Palace at Vicarage Road.

The one and only game on Thursday will see two European contenders, Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers, face off at the Emirates at 19:45 in a match that could have big implications on the top-four race.

Reds Making a Title Race

It seemed like the Premier League trophy was surely destined for the Etihad Stadium just a couple of weeks ago, as Man City had built up a 12-point lead at the top, but fast-forward to Wednesday and Liverpool will have the opportunity to move to within three points of the reigning champions.

The Reds have been relentless in their pursuit of the Citizens, making the most of Pep Guardiola’s men dropping points against Southampton and losing to Tottenham, and Jurgen Klopp’s troops have won their last eight matches across all competitions.

Next up for the Merseyside outfit is a home clash against relegation-threatened Leeds, who suffered a 4-2 loss at home to Manchester United last time out to make it four league games without a win and heap further misery on the West Yorkshire club.

The Whites are only five points above the relegation zone and if both Burnley and Watford pick up victories on Wednesday, against Spurs and Palace respectively, Marcelo Bielsa’s side will be dragged closer towards the bottom three.

Leeds have the second-worst defence in the league with 50 goals conceded, only rock-bottom Norwich have allowed more past them (53), while Liverpool boast the best attack with 64 goals scored.

Taking everything into account, a home win with over 3.5 goals in the match at 20/23 looks like the betting route to go down.

Renewed Hope for Duo

Burnley and Watford, 19th and 18th respectively, both boosted their survival chances with wins last time out and they will both be eyeing another three points when they are in action on Wednesday.

The Clarets, who have two games in hand on those around them, are five points adrift of 17th-placed Newcastle but a win for Sean Dyche’s men at home to Spurs would make the relegation picture a lot brighter for them.

However, the Lancashire outfit face a tough task against a Tottenham side that just defeated leaders City 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium, a result that ended Spurs’ three-game losing streak in the league.

Burnley are looking more threatening with January arrival Wout Weghorst leading the line, which suggests they should get on the scoresheet on Wednesday, but Antonio Conte’s visitors should have enough to get the win and backing Spurs to win and both teams to score at 12/5 is the way to go.

Like the Clarets, Watford also picked up a win last time out, a 1-0 success at Aston Villa, to give Roy Hodgson his first victory since taking charge and reduce the gap to Newcastle to four points.

The Hornets still have a long way to go if they are going to get out of trouble but they will fancy their chances of racking up back-to-back wins, something they haven’t done all season, when they host Palace.

Patrick Vieira’s men are stumbling in the league, having failed to win any of their last six, and they are in danger of being dragged into the relegation scrap with just eight points separating them from the bottom three.

Watford can be backed at 9/4 to claim the spoils, while the draw is priced at 43/20 and Palace are 13/10 to triumph.

Top-Four Points on Emirates Menu

Thursday’s sole game comes from the Emirates as sixth-placed Arsenal, four points adrift of fourth-placed Man Utd but with three games in hand, take on Wolves, who sit seventh ahead of the midweek fixtures.

These two only met earlier this month, with the Gunners picking up a narrow 1-0 win at Molineux, but Wolves will be out for revenge and they arrive on the back of a 2-1 victory over Leicester City.

Bruno Lage’s side have won their last four away games, conceding just one goal in the process, and they can be backed at 19/5 to keep a clean sheet in Thursday’s contest.

Arsenal have picked up just one victory from their last four home matches across all competitions and they will need to be at their best if they are going to overcome a confident opposition.
