During the summer it looked likely that Steven Gerrard would go head to head with Eddie Howe for dominance in Glasgow, as Celtic identified the latter as the man to wrestle the title back from the blue half of the city.
However, the move for the former Bournemouth gaffer fell through and within months Gerrard was on his way out of Ibrox and in to the Premier League. Today they’ll be in opposing dugouts at St James’ Park but the need for all three points is no less important than it would’ve been in the Scottish Premiership.
We’ll learn a lot about the new-look Magpies today and whether they’ve turned the corner. Victory over Leeds United and a good win over Everton on Tuesday has the place buzzing and the feel-good factor could carry them to victory again today at 17/10.
At Turf Moor Burnley have a lot of work to do to climb out of the relegation zone but it’s unlikely to start today when Liverpool come calling. The Reds saw Manchester City open up a 12-point lead on them at the top of the table on Saturday so nothing less than all three points will do. Jurgen Klopp may have one eye on this week’s trip to Milan to face Inter but he should go strong here.
Wout Weghorst has impressed for Burnley since his arrival but the Clarets have failed to score in half of their games in the league, while Liverpool boast the third best defensive record so a Reds’ win to nil appeals at even money, compared to the 1/4 on them to win outright.
Brendan Rodgers has been under a lot of pressure this season and West Ham can turn up the heat on the Leicester City gaffer on their visit the the King Power this afternoon.
The Foxes have won just two of their last eight and look likely to be without key players once more including top scorer Jamie Vardy.
West Ham are purring at the moment (sorry!) and even the circus surrounding Kurt Zouma couldn’t distract them from a win at Watford last time out. They’re fourth in the table on merit and have a good recent record against Leicester, winning the last three meetings and scoring 10 goals the process. A Hammers win looks the way to go at 13/10.
In Scotland Shaun Maloney is another manager under the spotlight. His honeymoon period was brief as new Hibernian manager and his side face a massive test of their mettle at Championship leaders Arbroath in the Scottish Cup.
The Red Lichties have shown they are no respecters of reputation this season as the part-timers have stormed thier way to the top of the table despite operating on a shoe-string budget. Both sides’ predicaments are reflected in the odds for the match with Abroath just 5/2 and the Hibees at 1/1.
Ordinarliy you’d want to be on the underdog here but 5/2 seems on the short side and perhaps there’s just a bit value at the even money for Hibs.
Celtic are the in-form team in Scotland but it could be a much-changed side that attempts to get past Raith Rovers this afternoon at Celtic Park. Wednesday’s win at Pittodrie marked the end of a tough run of league fixtures for Ange Postecoglou’s side and he may take the opportunity to give some of his fringe players a run-out now that his squad is looking a bit more robust.
Trying to second-guess the Aussie manager is futile so best wait until the team news is in and jump on some potential goalscorers for the Hoops. James Forrest (5/1), youngster Ben Doak (13/2) or the returning Christopher Jullien (16/1) could be decent each-way goalscorer options.
