Novak Djokovic meets Daniil Medvedev in the US Open 2021 Men’s final at Flushing Meadows, New York on Sunday. Scroll down for Djokovic v Medvedev odds and betting picks.
World No. 1 and top seed Djokovic will be looking for the victory that would see him become only the second man in the Open Era, after Rod Laver in 1969, to complete the Calendar Year Grand Slam.
In doing so, the 34-year-old Serbian would also win a 21st major singles title, which would see him move clear of his long-time rivals, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, and become the sole holder of the men’s singles all-time record total of major titles.
Route to the Final
It’s not been the easiest route to the final for Djokovic (a three-time champion at the US Open), with him having dropped six sets in total across six matches and having only won one match in straight sets.
In his semi-final against the 24-year-old German Alexander Zverev, Djokovic had to recover from falling a set behind to win 4-6 6-2 6-4 4-6 6-2.
Daniil Medvedev in his 3rd Grand Slam Final
The 25-year-old Russian Medvedev will be contesting his third Grand Slam final on Sunday, having lost the US Open 2019 final at Flushing Meadows to Rafael Nadal and the Australian Open final to Djokovic in February this year.
In addition to final appearances at the Australian and US Opens, it’s been a generally successful year to date for Medvedev, with him also having won titles on the hard courts in Marseille and Toronto in 2021.
At this tournament he has only dropped one set in reaching the final, which was in a four-set victory over the Dutch qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp in the quarter-finals. It’s been an otherwise relatively straightforward run to the final for the Russian.
Medvedev booked his place in the final with a 6-4 7-5 6-2 win over the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in his semi-final and will now be looking to claim his first Grand Slam title.
Medvedev might have been the more impressive player in reaching the final this year, but the incentive of making history and moving ahead of Federer and Nadal as the most successful single’s player in history could give Djokovic the edge.
