The Bundesliga continues its comeback this weekend and after a thrilling mid-week programme, supporters are anticipating another round of equally exciting German football fixtures on Saturday and Sunday.
With the battle for points and places already starting to intensify, the league’s match-definers and goal-getters will be determined to find scoring form ahead of the climactic final period of the 2019/20 campaign.
Below, we’ve listed some of the Bundesliga goalscorers to watch out for his weekend and remember – we’ll be covering all the German top tier action on our Bundesliga predictions page.
Jean-Phillipe Mateta
Mainz vs Hoffenheim (Saturday, May 30)
When Mainz take on Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, the goals usually flow. In the clubs’ last eight meetings, the net bulged an insane average of 5.25 times per 90 minutes, and Mainz thumped Die Kraichgauer 5-1 in the sides’ most recent skirmish in November.
The fixture’s high-scoring history suggests that the attackers involved in Saturday’s latest encounter should have plenty of opportunities to register, and Mainz hitman Jean-Phillipe Mateta will likely be at the front of the queue when the chances present themselves.
Mateta, who was Mainz’s top scorer last season, has had a 2019/20 campaign marred by injuries, but after starting and racking up three attempts in mid-week against Union Berlin, the Frenchman looks primed to get among the goals against a Hoffenheim outfit he notched against in this fixture last year.
Matheus Cunha
Hertha Berlin vs Augsburg (Saturday, May 30)
Like many of his Hertha Berlin counterparts, Matheus Cunha looks a player reborn under the direction of new Die Alte Dame boss Bruno Labbadia, and the Brazilian will again be key to his team’s chances of picking up maximum points against Augsburg on Saturday.
With four goals in his last five Bundesliga games either side of the campaign’s temporary postponement, Cunha’s match-swinging clout is on the up and the 21-year-old has the skill-set to cause Augsburg more than a few headaches in the capital this weekend.
Maximilian Arnold
Wolfsburg vs Eintracht Frankfurt (Saturday, May 30)
Wolfsburg stunned Champions League chasing Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday in a coupon-busting 4-1 triumph at the BayArena that was as unexpected as it was impressive.
Die Wölfe midfielder Maximilian Arnold was the star of the show in his team’s surprise victory, finishing the contest with a goal and two assists during his sparkling man of the match performance.
Powered by the confidence gained by that virtuoso display, Arnold will be Wolfsburg’s biggest danger man again for what looks another winnable game for the club against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday evening.
Serge Gnabry
Bayern Munich vs Fortuna Dusseldorf (Saturday, May 30)
Having rattled the net four times against Fortuna Dusseldorf in each of their last two skirmishes, Bayern Munich are expected to run up a similar scoreline against the relegation candidates at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.
Prolific wide attacker Serge Gnabry got in on the act in both of those convincing Bayern wins against Fortuna, and having failed to break his Bundesliga duck in three attempts since the restart, the 24-year-old will view Saturday’s game as chance to get his numbers moving.
Marcus Thuram
Borussia Monchengladbach vs Union Berlin (Sunday, May 31)
With their push for Champions League qualification begging to falter, three points is a must for Borussia Monchengladbach when they host Union Berlin on Sunday.
Promising French youngster Marcus Thuram has often looked like Die Fohlen’s most threatening attacker this season, and it’s worth noting that five of the eight Bundesliga goals he has scored this term were notched in games at BORUSSIA-PARK.
Thuram’s two goal haul from his first trio of fixtures back in the saddle since the resumption of play is a decent return for wide-attacker, and with his touch in the final third looking sharp, the 22-year-olds is the one to watch again on Sunday.
