The African Nations Cup comes in to focus today with reigning champions Senegal in action this afternoon.
Hosts Ivory Coast got off to a winning start on Saturday but Egypt and Nigeria were held to surprise draws and Ghana were shocked by Cape Verde by on their opening matches yesterday.
The Senegalese were very slow starters in the 2021 edition before going on to lift the trophy. It took a 97th Sadio Mane goal to win their opener against Zimbabwe before they drew 0-0 with Guinea and also with Malawi – topping the group with five points and just one goal scored!
They never looked back though, eventually winning the tournament on penalties over Egypt following another 0-0 stalemate.
An impressive 4-2 win over Brazil in Portugal back in June has raised expectations that the Lions of Teranga can retain their crown but in a group that also includes Cameroon, Naby Keïta’s Guinea and 2021’s surprise package Gambia they might not be able to afford to ease their way in the competition this time round.
Senegal are 23 unbeaten against neighbours Gambia since the nations first met in 1980 and are 1/3 to pick up their first three points in this afternoon’s match.
Gambia’s matches don’t tend to feature many goals. Only TWO of their last 17 outings have gone Over 2.5 Goals. That suggests they might keep things tight against Senegal and Under 2.5 is 13/20 but a more adventurous option could be to back Senegal to win by a single goal margin at 12/5.
If you’d rather take Senegal just to win then you can double them up with Algeria to beat Angola for an even money double.
