There’s a limited Premier League card this weekend but we should be in for some entertainment when Newcastle host Manchester City tonight.
Eddie Howe could do with a big performance and result to reignite his side’s season and what better opportunity than when the reigning champions come calling.
The Magpies have had a disappointing season but recorded a morale-boosting 3-0 victory over Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear Derby last weekend. Defeat would’ve been unthinkable for Howe in that but the win gives him something to build on.
Unfortunately for him Man City are hitting some solid form and last week’s 5-0 win over Huddersfield saw the welcome return of Kevin de Bruyne and the exciting Jeremy Doku. Erling Haaland is also back in training and with a two-week break on the horizon we could see the Norwegian feature at some point.
8/13 around a City win looks fair enough and they should grab a couple of goals. Adding two or more for the visitors gives us a 5/6 BetBuilder. Alternatively you can have 2/1 on Pep’s men to score three or more on it’s own.
Today’s other Premier League offering is the West London Derby between Chelsea and Fulham. It looks like a game best left alone with neither side in convincing form.
In the Championship Coventry City could give league leaders Leicester City a run for their money at 13/5 in the early kick-off. The Sky Blues have lost just once at home, are unbeaten in seven in the league and put six past Oxford Utd in the cup last weekend, making it 16 goals scored in their last five.
BTTS pays 8/11 in this one but those lunchtime kick-offs always feel like they lack a bit of intensity to tread carefully.
Southampton looked nailed on to win at home against Sheffield Wednesday who have only won seven points on the road all season.
At the Den, Millwall could take advantage of Middlesbrough’s midweek exertions. Boro earned a 1-0 first leg lead over Chelsea in the EFL Cup but their form has been a bit of a mixed bag.
The Lions will be full of confidence on a run of five unbeaten in the league and look a bit overpriced at 9/5 against a Boro side that they’ve already beaten this season.
Into League 1 and you’d want to be on Bolton against anyone these days. The Trotters are breathing down Portsmouth’s neck at the top of the table and have won four on the spin. Doubling them with a similarly priced Southampton pays just under even money.
Port Vale have been among the goals lately, their last six games have finished 3-2, 1-1, 2-3, 3-0, 2-1 and 3-3. They’re at Reading where 75% of matches have finished Over 2.5 so the 9/10 on it landing today appeals.
In League 2 Tranmere’s home record is pretty good (8 wins from 13) despite being 16th in the table. Today’s opponents MK Dons are 8th but lost 3-0 at Doncaster last week so Rovers could be worth an interest at 13/8.
Goals continue to be a feature of Partick Thistle’s matches with 73 scored in their 20 Championship matches so far. A remarkable 18 of those have gone over 2.5 goals. They hit four last weekend whilst today’s opponents Morton were scoring three at Dundee United so there should be goals at Cappielow today where three or more pays 8/13.
Both Arbroath and Ayr United fans have seen plenty of Over 2.5 games too although it’s usually their own team that’s on the receiving end. They both meet at Garfield today in what could prove to be a six-pointer at the foot of the table. Add this one at 7/10 to complete an Over 2.5 Goals Treble.
The African Cup of Nations gets underway this evening as host country, Ivory Coast kick things off against Guinea-Bissau.
There’ll be lots of interest among Nottingham Forest fans who’ll be tuning in to see how Serge Aurier, Willy Boly and Ibrahim Sangaré fare.
Les Éléphants’ squad is laced with players from the top leagues in Europe and they’re 2/9 to start with a win.
The tournament is live on Sky Sports and there’s plenty of representation from clubs in England, from Ilkeston Town’s Tanzanian, Ben Starkie to Liverpool’s Ballon d’Or contender, Mohamed Salah.
Salah’s Egypt are 9/1 to win the tournament but the market is led by World Cup semi-finalists Morrocco who are 5/1 favourites, followed by Senegal (6/1), Algeria (7/1) and Ivory Coast (7/1). Tanzania are 100/1!!
