Wales need a minor miracle if they’re to qualify for next summer’s Euros this evening.
They blew the chance to take control of their own destiny with a 1-1 draw in Armenia on Saturday, now they need to beat Turkey and hope that the Armenians can do them a favour in Croatia by drawing at least – a 16/1 double for any optimistic Welshmen.
That would leave Wales on the same points as Croatia but with a better head-to-head and on their way to Germany.
Although already qualified Turkey need a point to ensure they’ll finish in top spot so won’t be taking this one lightly but we’ve seen a few teams tail off after securing qualification.
Wales are 5/4 to win but you wonder if the stuffing has been knocked out of them following that disappointment in Armenia. A full stadium in Cardiff will be roaring them on but the mood might be tempered by what’s happening over in Zagreb.
The first goal line has been set at 29:00 minutes, Wales have managed a goal before that mark just Ince this campaign, as have Turkey, so on a night when neither side will likely to go gung-ho and slow start could be profitable.
Top spot is still up for grabs in Group I. Romania are top, two points ahead of Switzerland and they both meet in Bucharest tonight.
Two goals at the death earned Romania a 2-2 draw in Lucerne and late goals were a feature of Switzerland’s campaign. They also conceded in added time in Kosovo to drop two points, in the 89th minute in Israel at the expense of another two points and an 82nd minute Kosovan equaliser on Saturday cost them top spot in the table.
They themselves rescued a point at home to Belarus. Having gone 3-1 down in the 84th minute they scored two in two minutes before the final whistle for a 3-3 draw.
Following that trend tonight a goal after 74:59 pays 5/6, including added time that could give us a good 20 minutes or more to see a goal in a game that there’s enough riding on for it matter to both nations.
After a 14-0 drubbing by France on Saturday you have to fear the worst for Gibraltar who host the Netherlands this evening.
The good news is that the Dutch have already qualified so they may not have their foot on the gas, but then, so had France!
A fragile Gib side will be out to restore some pride but if they concede early the floodgates could open again and Over 5.5 goals at 10/11 will be popular. As might the 14/1 on the goals tally reaching double figures again.
