It’s been an eventful Champions League campaign so far for Celtic to say the least…
Reduced to nine men at De Kuip they were content to escape with a 2-0 defeat. Then at home to Lazio they thought they’d secured all three points only for Luis Palma’s strike to be ruled out by the finest of margins. To rub salt in to their wounds 36-year-old Pedro popped up with a winner for the Italians in the 95th minute.
Brendan Rodgers would take a less eventful game tonight if it mean they got some points on the board.
But it’s now just one win in 23 for the Hoops in Europe’s elite competition (D5 L17) and the bookies rate them 11/4 chances to claim all three points. That feels a bit skinny up against a seasoned Atleti side that have won their last six including a 3-1 victory in the Madrid Derby. The Spaniards look the bet at 10/11.
Antione Griezmann bagged a hat-trick at the weekend to take his tally to 8 (in 11) for the season. The 32-year-old seems to be playing in a free role under Diego Simeone and is a handy 7/4 to net tonight.
Over in Rotterdam, Lazio could do Celtic a favour by beating Feyenoord. That would give Celtic a better chance of qualifying for the Europa League which is now surely their target.
Lazio have shown some resolve so far with late, late goals earning them a point against Atletico and all three in Glasgow.
This should be another tight game and they look too big at 13/5 to win and the 5/6 on Draw or Lazio appeals too. But best bet could be BTTS & Over 2.5 Goals which pays 20/21. Feyenoord don’t conced many domestically but Lazio have scored in eight of their last nine and pose plenty of threat going forward in a game that looks primed for goals.
Newcastle have made a stunning return to the Champions League with a hard-fought 0-0 draw at AC Milan which was followed up with a thumping 4-1 win over PSG. We tipped them at 2/1 that night but the bookies have learnt their lesson and have priced the Magpies up at just 8/13 to beat Borussia Dortmund tonight.
Dortmund remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga but they’ve had a relatively kind run of fixtures to start the season – their highest placed opponents so far are Frieburg who sit eighth in the table, so tougher assignments definitely lie ahead.
Perhaps more telling is the fact they’ve failed to score in their two Group F matches.
An exuberant Toon Army will be expecting another three points which Eddie Howe’s men look more than capable of delivering. If 8/13 is too short, double them up with Barcelona to beat Shakhtar Donetsk.
Man City could put one foot in the knock-out stages with a win on the artificial grass against Young Boys. The reigning champions have stuttered a bit in their opening two matches but eventually overpowered Red Star and RB Leipzig to sit atop Group G with six points.
They’re 1/5 to win but a nagging concern is the fact the won just one away tie en route to lifting the trophy last season, including two 0-0 draws in the group stages.. They should get the job done but 1/5 or any kind of handicap bet isn’t that appealing.
Erling Haaland’s Champions League drought now stands at five matches. He was on the scoresheet on Saturday for the first time in five matches but is just a miserly 1/2 to score in Switzerland. The striker is 13/2 to grab a third Champions League hat-trick.
Antwerp look out of their depth in Group H and face a stiff test at home against two-time winners Porto.
A 5-0 opening day defeat against Barca was confounded by throwing away a two-goal advantage to Shakhtar, leaving them pointless at the bottom of the table.
The Portuguese should have enough about them to nick the three points in Belgium at 21/20, where Over 2.5 Porto goals also appeals at 10/11.
