There’s nothing to separate a clutch of teams in the Championship and two of them meet tonight at St Andrew’s in search of a win that that would help separate them from the pack.
Ten teams are separated by just two points from 5th place to 14th. West Brom are the team at the head of the pack, one point ahead of tonight’s West Midlands Derby opponents Birmingham City.
The Baggies have made a patchy start to the season, winning only four but their 4-0 win at the previously unbeaten Preston last weekend made the rest of the Championship sit up and take notice. They followed that up with a 1-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday in a match they totally dominated so they bring some momentum with them in to tonight’s derby.
After a strong start to the season Birmingham six without a win (L4 D2) before stopping the rot in midweek with a comprehensive 4-1 win over 19th place Huddersfield.
That win puts a bit of a different complexion on tonight’s match and the bookies are finding it hard to separate them with the hosts at 13/8 versus Albion at 7/4. At a push, West Brom’s greater firepower could be the deciding factor.
In Germany, Mainz have had a tough start to the season and prop up the Bundesliga after six matches where they’ve only picked up one point.
They face another tricky night at Borussia Monchengladbach who picked up their first win of the season last weekend.
The fixture computer hasn’t been kind to the Foals who had to play three of the current top five in their first six games so they’ll relish the chance to put another three points on the board against the bottom-of-the-table side at 11/10. They can also notch a couple of goals. In their other three matches they’ve notched 10 goals and can add another two at 4/5 this evening.
