The Boylesports Irish Greyhound Derby over 550 yards is one of Ireland’s sporting highlights, and Saturday’s final at Shelbourne Park in Dublin promises to be a thriller.
The Other Kobe heads the betting at 2/1 after superb all-the-way wins in the quarter and semi-finals and will prove tough to beat if he comes away to another flying start and makes the bend in front. His litter brother, Born Warrior, won last year’s final, and if The Other Kobe lands the spoils at the weekend, they will become the first siblings to have ever won the Premier event.
None of the finalists are dismissed, but 40/1 shot Threesixfive will need to run the race of her life if she is going to get competitive. As well as The Other Kobe, there is an abundance of pace in the field, with the fastest semi-final winner, Music Glideaway (4/1), perfectly drawn in trap six and set for another big run.
The others capable of getting into the mix in the early exchanges are trap one runner Well Met, who is trading at around the 5/1 mark, and Bockos Crystal (6/1), who bids to become just the tenth bitch to win the event in its 95-year history, a danger to all if finding her very best form.
Bens Teddy completes the field and could be the answer in a tricky betting heat. He is probably the best value at 4/1, and it will be no surprise to see him go off a good deal shorter on Saturday.
He has produced some eye-catching performances throughout the event, and while he would do well to trouble the front runners on the dash to the first bend, he is set for the smoothest of runs in behind and will be powering through the field from halfway. He will need a slice of luck to find a way through the pack but will be closing quickly on the run for home and can steal the €125,000 prize near the line.
Best Bets:
- Bens Teddy – 9.24 Shelbourne Park
- Beepers Lariat – 9.48 Shelbourne
