Eight months ago Aberdeen travelled to deepest darkest Ayshire for a Scottish Cup tie against sixth tier Darvel. A shock 1-0 defeat was sandwiched in between two heavy defeats in Edinburgh which ultimately cost Jim Goodwin his job.
Since then Barry Robson has turned things around but tonight he faces a similarly tricky cup match, away to Stirling Albion – one of the form teams in Scotland.
Albion gained promotion to League One with a brilliant end to the season which they’ve carried in to this one, a run which has seen them beaten just twice in 26 matches. The first of those defeats was in their final match of the season when their race had been run, the second in midweek when Darren Young opted to rest several first-teamers in a 3-0 loss to East Kilbride.
An eye-catching 4-0 win at St Johnstone for Young’s men in the group stages of this competition is all the warning Robson needs that this won’t be a walk in the park.
The Binos are 11/2 to pull off the win but with two full divisions separating the sides you’d want bigger than that to get involved.
They should make things tough for the Dons but the Premiership side’s quality should prevail. It could be a tight one so the 13/5 on Aberdeen winning with there being Under 2.5 goals appeals. Alternatively you can have the Dons to win and Under 3.5 goals at 6/5.
The Friday night match in the Premiership is at the City Ground where Nottingham Forest welcome Sheffield United.
Most pundits think it’ll be a long season for the Blades and they’re second favourites to go down.
Both sides started with opening day defeats but Forest will be feeling more positive about their performance at the Emirates than United will about their 1-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace.
Forest’s home form was good enough to keep them up last season and they should get their first three points on the board tonight at 10/11.
