Pep Guardiola could probably do without tonight’s UEFA Super Cup final in Greece but it’s another chance to add more silverware to an historic season for the club.
Whilst tonight’s match is new territory for City it’ll be Sevilla’s seventh appearance in the final, and their fifth in the last decade, all courtesy of a phenomenal recent record in the Europa League.
They’ve come out on top just once, back in 2006 when they humbled a star-studded Barcelona side.
In recent times it’s been the reigning European Champions that have come out on top in the showpiece match. Atletico Madrid, in 2018, are the only Europa League winners to have lifted the trophy in the last 10 years.
Incredibly seven of those 10 have gone to extra-time, three of them going all the way to penalties. It’s 4/1 for the match to finish level tonight whilst it’s 15/2 for City to win on pens and 17/2 Sevilla.
But Pep’s men are clear favourites at 4/11 to win inside the 90 minutes. It’ll be the Spaniard’s fourth time leading a team in to the match and he’s got a 100% record so he clearly takes this one seriously.
It’s hard to see past Pep making four from four and it could be that man Haaland that makes the difference. He ended a mini drought with a brace on the opening day of the season and is 4/6 to add another tonight. Double that with the City win for a 10/11 BetBuilder.
The Lionesses haven’t hit top gear in the tournament but one by one they’ve watched the demise of Germany, USA, France, Brazil, Japan and now Sweden, leaving them the top ranked team left in the tournament.
In fact the Matildas will be the first team ranked inside the World Top 10 that Sarina Wiegman’s ladies will have faced at the tournament after successfully disposing of Nigeria (40th) and Colombia (25th) in the two previous knock-out rounds.
They’ll surely never have a better chance of lifting the trophy, which is currently a 2/1 shot.
Bookies make them favourites to get the better of the host nation this morning at 7/5 to win inside the 90 minutes. Australia are 23/10.
The Aussies have already achieved greatness in front of their own fans in reaching the semi-finals and have plenty of momentum. All eyes will be on the team news to see if Sam Kerr makes it from the start but doubts remain that she’s fully match fit.
It looks like it’ll be a tight match but England just have more quality around the pitch which could see them edge it and book their place in the final.
