No team has ever won four consecutive top flight titles in England but that’s the task ahead of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City who begin the defence of their crown against Burnley tonight.
As far as the bookies are concerned the destination of the Premier League trophy looks a forgone conclusion with City well clear of the chasing pack at 8/11 to be champions for a sixth time in seven season.
It’ll be club legend Vincent Kompany who is aiming to put an early dent in their campaign at Turf Moor tonight after guiding Burnley to an impressive promotion last term.
City ran out 6-0 winners when the sides met in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last season with Erling Haaland grabbing a hat-trick en route to an incredible 52 goals in 54 appearances. However the Norwegian failed to scored in any of City’s last six matches of last season but he’s 8/11 to open his season’s account tonight and 12/5 to break the deadlock.
The Clarets turned Turf Moor in to a bit of a fortress last season, only losing once at home in the Championship but it’s a different story when you’re up against the champions of Europe and they’re 13/2 to pull off a surprise opening day win.
City are 1/3 but Pep Guardiola felt they were a little undercooked ahead of the Community Shield, which they subsequently lost on penalties to Arsenal, so it could take them a while to get going but they should get the job done.
The last eight meetings between the sides have been won by an aggregate of 26-1 in City’s favour so another win to nil could be the best route to profit at 6/5.
