Despite what Lee Carsley thinks, England most definitely ARE favourites in tonight’s European Championship semi-final against Israel.
The Young Lions are actually just 4/11 to win inside the 90 minutes with the Israelis a huge 7/1 to reach the final in Batumi on Saturday without the need for extra-time or penalties.
But Carsley does have a point. This is going to be a bit tougher than the odds suggest despite the fact England were victorious against Israel in Group C last week.
We’ve previously highlighted the experience of the young Israeli players and that several were in the squad that reached last year’s U19 Euro final, losing out to England in extra-time. They then finished 3rd in the U20 World Cup earlier in June, losing out to eventual winners, Uruguay in the semi-final.
They’ve shown some resolve in this tournament so far too, coming through a tough group before taming the hosts, Georgia, in the quarter-finals to win on penalties.
As for England, things could hardly have gone any better. Four games in and they’ve yet to concede a goal with wins over Czech Republic, Israel, Germany and Portugal.
A fifth consecutive win to nil pays even money which looks a good option considering Israel have only scored twice in their four matches so far.
After saving two penalties against Germany in their opener, Maccabi Tel Aviv’s goalkeeper, Daniel Peretz was the hero once again in the penalty shoot-out win over Georgia. He could be a key man again tonight in keeping England at bay. One goal was enough for Carsley’s side to squeeze past Portugal and a single goal win could be on the cards again this evening at 13/5.
