Steve Clarke could hardly have wished for a better start to Scotland’s Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. A 3-0 win over Cyprus was followed by a stunning 2-0 win over 2012 champions Spain, to propel them to the top of Group A.
When the groups were drawn it looked like straight shoot-out between Scotland and Norway for second place but a win in Oslo tonight would put the Scots eight points clear of their opponents with just five games to play after a slow start by the Norwegians.
Scoring sensation Erling Haaland was missing for their opening two matches in which they were soundly beaten by the Spanish and could only manage a draw against a dangerous Georgia side. So the pressure is on Ståle Solbakken’s side who will view this one as a must-win.
But it’s a squad full of quality, playing across the top leagues in Europe, led by Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard and they’re rightful favourites at 21/20.
Scotland are 11/4 to claim the win but they’ll be happy enough with a draw at 23/10. It’s 8/11 for the Scots to avoid defeat on the Double Chance market or a bigger 1.850 on the Asian Handicap with +0.5 of a start.
Haaland is the man they’re going to have to keep quiet. He’s scored 13 goals in his last nine games for his country to make it 21 in 23 overall. The European Golden Shoe winner is even money to net tonight and 3/1 to open the scoring.
Scotland’s John McGinn continues to be over-priced by the bookies to get his name on the scoresheet. With 16 goals he’s 7th on the all-time list for Scotland and is always a goal threat for Clarke’s side. He’s 9/2 to get on the scoresheet this evening.
Earlier in the week we flagged up Georgia to win in Cyprus at even money and they’ve been backed in to 19/20. They’ve lost just one of their last 14 matches, a 3-0 friendly defeat to Morocco in UAE and as mentioned above earned a draw against Norway last time out so are still attractive at that price.
Hungary also looked a good price at 11/10 to win away at Montenegro and they’ve drifted out a touch to 23/20. After an excellent Nations League campaign they started their assault on Euro 2024 with a convincing 3-0 win over Bulgaria and could be worth getting on side with tonight.
