It’s all about the play-offs north and south of the border tonight.
In England things are on a knife-edge in the League One Play-off semi-final between Bolton and Barnsley following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at the University of Bolton Stadium.
The Tykes felt themselves unlucky not to come away with a win especially after 19 shots on goal to Wanderers’ seven. 19/20 to get the job done in front of their own fans at Oakwell looks reasonably priced.
Bolton will look to draw on their 3-0 win at Barnsley earlier in the season but that was after Mads Andersen’s early dismissal for the home side and Barnsley avanged that defeat by knocking Wanderers out of the FA Cup in the first round – the first time they’d beaten Bolton in 15 attempts!
So this will be the fifth meeting between the sides and as it stands its a win apiece and two draws.
At Firhill, Partick Thistle welcome Ayr United for tonight’s Scottish Premiership Play-Off first leg. The Jags triumphed 8-3 over Queen’s Park in the previous round, winning 4-0 away from home after almost relinquishing their commanding lead at home in the first leg.
That should see them come in to this tie high in confidence. They’ve lost just once in their last 15 matches as they made a late surge under 36-year-old Kris Doolan. Evergreen Brian Graham is still banging in the goals but there’s been an impressive array of goalscorers who’ve helped Thistle to 24 goals in in their last eight outings.
However it was Ayr United that finished 2nd in the table on a dramatic final matchday in the Championship. Few would have predicted a 2-1 win at Scottish Cup finalists Inverness on the last day of the season but that was kind of sypmtomatic of the Honest Men’s campaign in which they failed to win 20 of their 36 matches despite being runners-up.
There’s been little between the sides when they’ve met this season, Ayr won the first clash 4-2 at Somerset Park, before Thistle claimed revenge in a 3-2 win in December. Kris Doolan’s first game in charge saw the Jags win 1-0 away from home in February’s meeting and in their most recent match-up the scores finished level when Ayr’s top scorer Dipo Akinyemi cancelled out an early Scott Tiffoney strike.
The home side are 17/20 to take a first leg lead down to Ayrshire next week but they’ll probably need to score at least two (4/5 at Bet365) if they’re to do so. They manged just five clean sheets in 18 home games and two of those came against the league’s lowest scorers, Arbroath. Ayr found the net in 15 of their 18 road trips so could be good to get on the scoresheet tonight.
Over 2.5 goals is a paltry 8/11 but add in BTTS and it’s a more attractive 21/20.
