After 35 rounds of fixtures in the Scottish Championship nine of the ten team’s fate will be decided in one last 90 minutes of football.
Only Raith Rovers have nothing to play for tonight with the other teams vying for the title, play-off places and to avoid relegation.
Let’s start at the top…
It’s looked like no-one has wanted to win the Championship title at times this season. Five different teams have topped the table but with one game to go it’s Dundee who are at the summit. Avoid defeat at second placed Queen’s Park (game played at Stenhousemuir’s Ochilview Park) this evening and they’ll secure their return to the top flight.
The Spiders will be rueing a missed opportunity to go top last week when they lost 2-1 to Morton. That made it just one win in six for Owen Coyle’s side who have capitulated just when it mattered most. However, they’re still in with a chance and one last, huge performance could complete a remarkable rise up the leagues for Scotland’s oldest club.
Only a win will do for Queen’s Park and they’re 11/5 to pull it off. The Dark Blues are 10/11 to win and 2/7 to avoid defeat in the Double chance market.
In the Highlands things are pretty clear cut for Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Ayr United. Both teams are tied on 55 points but Ayr’s superior goal difference means they’re the ones sitting inside the play-off zone.
That means a win for either side will guarantee a top four spot. A draw could suit the visitors but that would leave them vulnerable to being overtaken by Morton who need to win at Cove.
Caley have been the form team in the division during the run-in and made it a season to remember when they booked their place in the Scottish Cup Final last weekend. They’re a very strong 11/8 to win tonight and set-up a thrilling climax to the season for their fans.
Partick Thistle will be confident of getting the win they need to book a top four slot when they make the trip to Kirkcaldy to face Raith Rovers.
The Jags’ only defeat in 12 has come at Inverness so they’ll go in to the play-offs in good shape.
Rovers have struggled to even fill their bench in recent weeks and it’s just as well they racked up a decent points tally earlier in the season as they’ve won just one point from the last 18 available.
Thistle shouldn’t slip up tonight at 4/6.
Both teams could suffer disappointment at the Balmoral Stadium tonight.
Visitors Morton (1/1) must win and hope other results go their way if they’re to end up in the play-offs.
Hosts Cove Rangers (11/5) are involved in a three-way battle to avoid the drop at the other end of the table and they too are reliant on how things go elsewhere.
A win for Paul Hartley’s side could be enough to secure Championship football again next season but not if Arbroath beat Hamilton.
It’s the Accies who occupy the automatic relegation spot at the moment and they’ve really struggled this season. They looked to have secured a priceless three points at home to Partick Thistle with an 89th minute strike but conceded in the 92 minute to deliver a hammer blow to their survival chances.
A point should be enough for Arbroath thanks to a huge goal difference advantage over Cove. Expect Dick Campbell’s side to try keep things tight for as long as they can at Gayfield tonight.
