The managerial merry-go-round is in full spin after a weekend of departures in the Premier League.
Two managerless teams are in action tonight as Chelsea welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge after the Blues’ board brought Graham Potter’s ill-fated tenure to an end and at the King Power Stadium Leicester City, minus Brendan Rodgers, host Aston Villa.
Potter lasted just 31 matches in the job and is temporarily replaced by Bruno Saltor for tonight’s match which features two sides who desperately need a win to boost morale.
Liverpool were soundly beaten at the Etihad at the weekend after taking the lead, a third defeat in a row following their 7-0 win over Manchester United and a ninth league defeat of the season – just one fewer than tonight’s opponents. But Jurgen Klopp still has the personnel to beat the best on their day.
The fact that Chelsea have disposed of two managers this season tells it’s own story. Only 10 league victories in 28, and all of those have come against bottom-half opposition, doesn’t inspire for a home win tonight at 7/5.
Of course we don’t know how the Blues will respond to a new voice in the dressing room but Liverpool look the value bet to end their losing streak at 19/10.
The alarm bells must be ringing for Leicester City fans who have seen their team slip down the table to second bottom. They’ve not been in the top half all season and the board must be hoping that a change in the managerial hotseat can shock the players in to some kind of form before it’s too late.
When Rodgers joined the club it was in a healthy position and under his guidance they added a first FA Cup triumph to their honours list but now it looks like a club in decline and might struggle to attract a top-level manager that can turn things around.
In the immediate term a win over Aston Villa tonight would give them some breathing but there’s little to justify them being favourites against one of the form teams in the Premier League.
Aston Villa were excellent in their win at Stamford Bridge and after nine wins in his 15 games in charge you can now see Unai Emery stamping his own personality on the Villa set-up. Only Arsenal and Manchester City have won more points than Villa since Emery’s arrival and they look good value at 9/5 this evening.
Leeds United’s matches have seen plenty of goals lately and while they should make it three home wins from three for Javier Gracia against Nottingham Forest Over 2.5 Goals could be a play at even money. Their last three matches have averaged five goals apiece with seven scored and eight conceded. Play it a bit safer by backing Over 1.5 Goals at Elland Road and double it up with a win for Stirling Albion in Scottish League Two.
The Binos have opened up a five point gap at the top and a win in tonight’s game in hand would take them a massive step closer to the title. A 3-0 win against tonight’s opponents Elgin City on Saturday suggests another three points will remain at the Forthbank Stadium this evening.
