The Road to Germany starts today for Scotland and Steve Clarke should be toasting his new contract with a winning start to the campaign.
In terms of games managed Clarke is Scotland’s longest serving manager since Craig Brown and his contract extension, until 2026, should see him close in on Brown’s 71 games in charge. Qualification for Euro 2024 would go a long way to helping him to that tally begining this afternoon against Cyprus.
The Scots have the safety net of also being able to qualify via the Nations League play-offs but there’ll be no thoughts about that at this stage.
It’s rare to see Scotland as short as 1/4 to win but they’ve a faultless record against this afternoon’s opponents (7 wins from 7) and the 5/6 on the Dark Blues to win to nil appeals against the Cypriots who have failed to score in nine of their last 12 competitive away matches.
Stand out bet from a goalscoring point of of view is the 11/5 on offer for John McGinn to find the net. The Aston Villa is a certain starter under Clarke and he’s way out in front in terms of number of goals scored in the current squad. His 15 goals accounts for 30% of the goals scored by the entire squad and his ability to get forward in Clarke’s set-up always makes him a danger.
The Tartan Army will be keeping a keen eye on the clash in Malaga between Spain and Norway. Arguably a win for the Spaniards would be the best result for Scotland based on the assumption that they’ll top the group. That would hopefully mean a straight shoot-out between the Norwegians and Scotland for second place.
But Norway will be without free-scoring Erling Haaland who misses out through injury and that massively swings things in Spain’s favour at 1/3.
Also in tonights qualifiers Romania and Switzerland should win with a couple of goals to spare against Andorra and Belarus respectively. Backing both -1.5 on the Asian Handicap pays over 7/5 at Bet365.
In England’s lower leagues Barrow look a bit of value at home to Wimbledon in League Two. You have to go back to the end of January for the Dons’ last win, some 11 games ago. Hosts Barrow have been ekeing out results that have seen them climb back up the table. They don’t score many so it could take one goal to win it but at 21/20 you’d fancy the home side to be the ones to get it.
Wrexham continue to blaze a trail in the National League and should take another step closer to promotion with a win over York. They’re just three goals short of 100 in the league and won’t be far off that tally by 4.45 this afternoon. Eight of their last 10 have seen Over 2.5 Goals as have seven of York’s last nine. It pays 13/20 today.
In League One in Scotland there’s a crucial match at the top of the table. Stirling Albion have reeled in Dumbarton in recent weeks and finally went top of the table following a midweek win over Forfar. The Sons on the other hand have hit a rough patch at just the wrong time. Few would’ve seen their 5-1 defeat at the hands of Albion Rovers coming last week but it was their third defeat in five.
Stirling thumped Dumbarton 6-0 when the sides last met and being the team with the momentum at the moment look like they’ll come out on top again at 17/20 to extend their lead at the summit.
