Newcastle have one foot in the League Cup final after last week’s 1-0 win over Southampton at St Mary’s, tonight they bid to get the job done back in the north east.
Can Southampton turn it around? In short, yes, but the odds are stacked against them. Newcastle have only lost twice all season and Saints boss Nathan Jones knows that the first goal will be crucial, “We have to do things right and make sure we start positively, and be our best. We’ll be aggressive, we want to go after the tie and we’d really like to get the first goal. If we can get the first goal then a lot of things can change – and a lot of things will change.”
At some point Southampton will need to come out and go for goal, in an ideal world for Jones that’ll be later in the game but the Magpies might have put the tie beyond them before then. It’s 4/9 that Newcastle win again whilst Saints’ fans might fancy a bit of the 7/1 on Southampton to win or a huge 12/1 on them to qualify.
It’s hard to see past the Toon Army celebrating a Wembley appearance that would take them to the brink of their first major trophy since the 1968-69 campaign. It’s never ideal to be backing a team that don’t NEED to win but a pumped up home crowd can carry Eddie Howe’s side to the final in style tonight.
In the Championship Luton look a good price at 1/1 to get the better of Cardiff City. The visitors appointed former Forest manager Sabri Lamouchi as their new gaffer last week and will be hoping for an immediate new-manager bounce, but the Bluebirds haven’t won in nine.
Luton on the other hand still have their eyes firmly set on the play-offs and a win tonight could take them as high as third in the table.
In Scotland, Hibs will be bouyant ahead of their trip to Ross County after a 6-0 trouncing of Aberdeen on Saturday – a result that signalled the end for Dons boss Jim Goodwin.
The Staggies also recorded an important win over fellow strugglers Kilmarnock at the weekend, which lifted them off the bottom of the table on goal difference.
Both sides’ tails will be up and we could see some goals up in Dingwall. Over 2.5 goals appeals at 11/10.
