1955. The last time Newcastle won a major honour but there’s a feeling that the next one won’t be too far away.
Tonight they could take a step closer to silverware when they visit Southampton in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.
The Magpies won 4-1 on their last visit to St Mary’s and made it 15 unbeaten in the Premier League at the weekend with a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.
The Saints pulled off the result of the round in the quarter-finals when they disposed of Manchester City but they’re 4/1 to qualify for the final over the two legs. Newcastle are hot favourites at 1/6 to clinch a day at Wembley and 6/4 to lift the trophy.
First legs are always tricky to decipher. Will Southampton go for a win to take to St James’ Park? Will Eddie howe be happy to take a draw away from home?
Two-legged semi-finals have been a feature of the competition since it’s inception in 1960 and there’s a slight trend towards the first leg of matches going under 2.5 goals. 57.5% have seen fewer than three goals since the turn of the century, not exactly compelling but Under 2.5 goals tonight pays 4/5.
Newcastle have been involved in four goalless draws in their last 10 games. Defensively they’ve been excellent, conceding just two goals since their last visit to Southampton – those both came when an understrengthed side were dumped out of the FA Cup by Sheffield Wednesday.
Southampton though have been in decent scoring form, finding the net in eight of their last 10, scoring 12.
With 180 minutes of football ahead of them it’s unlikey either side will be out the traps too quickly. Newcastle’s first goals comes in the 43rd minutes on average, while for the Saints it’s the 45th minute so no goal in the first 30 minutes looks a good option at 5/6. If you’re feeling a bit braver it’s 7/4 there to be no goals in the first half.
Shout out to The Caddy who enjoyed another profitable weekend with his golf tips. His Super Banker Nap won thanks to the tournament winner Vicor Perez to beating Lee Westwood in the head-to-head match bet in Abu Dhabi. In the PGA event The Caddy’s 5 points Nap also won with Tony Finau winning his matchbet and each-way money returned via Shauffele, who finished 3rd at 20/1 and Tom Kim who place 6th at 22/1.
