The SPFL takes centre stage tonight with a full card of Premiership fixtures north of the border.
Celtic and Rangers will have their eyes on the traditional New Year’s clash coming up on Monday but before that they’ll both be desperate to keep the momentum going tonight.
Celtic face the trickier tie this evening, an away trip to Easter Road where Lee Johnson’s side picked up a much-needed win over Livingston on Saturday. Incredibly it was the sixth match (7 players in total) in which an opposition player was sent off against Hibs. On each ocassion they’ve been either trailing or the scores have been level and the Hibees have gone on to pick up a total of 16 points against the 10 men (9 in Rangers’ instance).
As long as Celtic keep 11 men on the park they might be in with a chance!
You have to go back to 2018 for Hibs last win in this fixture, 16 games ago, but Celtic have won just three of their last eight visits to Leith so this isn’t a guaranteed three points for Ange Postecoglou’s juggernaut.
Kevin Nisbet’s return to fitness has co-incided with the Hibees scoring six in their two matches since the World Cup break, while a little bit of slackness has crept in to the Celtic defence, losing two soft goals in their last two. So backing a Hibs goal (4/7) could be value as part of a BetBuilder. Alternatively back Both Teams to Score and there to be Over 2.5 Goals.
At Ibrox, Rangers will be looking for a confidence boosting win following three one-goal victories since Michael Beale’s appointment. Visitors Motherwell have left Ibrox with a point on each of their last two visits and they boast the third best away record in the league.
Performances under Beale haven’t been convincing so far but Rangers have found a way to get the job done and it could be another one-goal winning margin for the Gers tonight at 3/1.
Just two points separate the six teams between second and 8th in the table so any one of them could be third by the end of the evening. Aberdeen are the team currenty tucked in behind Rangers but their away form has been abysmal so you couldn’t back them with much confidence at Kilmarnock, especially as 7/5 favourites. That said, the Dons have a brilliant record in this fixture and are something of a bogey team for Killie. Going back the last 10 meetings Aberdeen have won seven and drawn three.
Elsewhere Dundee Utd cannot afford to lose at home to Ross County. They were denied all three points on Saturday thanks to a late Hearts penalty, which left them trailing County by two points at the foot of the table.
Key man for United is Dylan Levitt who has now scored three in his last four. His quality could prove the difference between two poor sides and give the hosts the edge at 10/11. Better value can be had by backing United to score 2+ goals, something they’ve done in three of their last four games.
